for a marine application, replacing 454 gas engines
I was told that the DD 8.2L and the CAT 3208 engines are very close in size to the chevy 454 and would both be a good diesel replacement, my question is what are the pros and cons for either choice ?
I was told the DD would be more ecomonical as the DD motors were used in busses and trucks and parts are everywhere and cheap, but I have also heard that although more $ for parts the cat's will last longer and be more reliable.... any thoughts ?
thanks ..

Well here's my take. Cat Cat Cat. You cannot beat a Cat. The 3208 is one of the finest diesel engines ever made. They are renown in the marine application. THey run forever and require very little maintenance. They are versatile, put out far more horsepower than the 8.2, and they are so common that parts if you should need them are readily available.
The 8.2 is a good engine, if you drive a post office truck.

thanks for the info.. what about maintenence ?
are they much more expensive then the DD ? and rebuild cost ?
also how much more then DD ?
I am probably going to buy some run-out motors and have them rebuilt, or possibly rebuild them myself.
I have built many V-8 gas in the past with very good results, are diesels much different ? I have no diesel experience whatsoever, however a good friend
is a large diesel engine tech, and is willing to help. do you think it is somthing I can handle ?
also if I decide to rebuild myself , where could I get rebuild manuals / service manuals for this engine ?/ the local CAT dealer ?
thanks again..

Maintenance is about the same. The filters for a Cat probably cost more if you use the stock ones. But in a boat I would install a good Racor setup.
The only difference between a diesel in a boat as opposed to a truck is that there's a huge heat exchanger where the air compressor woould be.
The manuals are available from the dealer and Ebay on occaision. But you will probably not need it as they run great and are some of the most reliable engines on the planet.

How do these compare to the Yanmar 6Y's? I am looking to repower a 35 ft luhrs that currently has gas motors (454's)

The Yanmars a smaller that's an inline six. The 3208 is a v8.
