Subject: 1986 Ford F350 Diesel Conversion

Message:
I need to replace the engine in my 86 Ford Crewcab Dually, but rather than rebuilding the 460 Ford V8, I would like to convert the truck over to a diesel.

I am considering using a 6V53T DD or Perkins 100-6.
I know that the Cummins or the IH / Power Stroke would be easier conversion, but I always liked the sound of a Detiot pulling hard.

Between the IH and the Cummins I would go with the Cummins. I don't care much for the IH motor, havng driven comparable trucks from Ford and Dodge, I feel the Cummins is a better motor for my uses.

I understand there are a couple of companies making motor mounts for Ford Cummins Conversions. But I am familar enough with fabricating motor and trans mounts that I don't think that will be a big problem. I've been building Street Rods for a long time, and havefairly good welding and fabricating skills.

getting the DD in maybe because of the weight and size issues.

Is putting a Detriot into a Ford a reasonable swap, or should I stick with the Perkins or the Cummins.

I thought I could use a 6610 Road Ranger behind either the Detriot or the Perkins.

Any and all sugestions appreciated.
Thanks;

Bob

I recently changed a detroit 6.2 to a 350 in my 83 GMC. And let me tell you it wasnt fun. Make sure your wiring wont be a problem and youll have enough room. I personally think the detroit 6.2 is junk. I would go with the cummings series B2. The only thing with those I have han alot come through the shop for rear mains leaking. We are talking brand new trucks. best bet cummings.

Just as a note the 6.2 GM engine is just that "GENERAL MOTORS" not a Detroit diesel, they are two completely different companies, infact if you go to the Detroit web page you will find that Detroit is owned by Daimler Chrysler.

Jake;

There are a couple of companies that make the motor mount kits for swapping the Cummings into full size ford pickups the big Bronco is the same chassis so they should work fine.

Look at Fordcummins.com, they should have almost all the hardware available.

You will need to swap the engine and trans, change the fuel tanks and lFuel lines, drive shaft, front springs, possibly bigger brakes on the friont end, and vacuum source for the power brake booster, speedo cable and lots of small stuff.

I planned on putting a vacuum pump on my F350 for vacuum for the power brakes, detriots do not develop much useable vacuum for a power booster. I'm not sure if that would be required with the Cummins. maybe some one on here knows. I am sure that the guys on Fordcummins.com will have a complete list of everything you need to change.

Go for the newer engines . The 5.9 cummins are are good weight power ratio ideal for light trucks.
what makes these engines lighter is they are designed to be disposable. they don't have clynder liners, alowing less block casting. I have a 93 gmc k-3500 with a 1000lb 5.9 cummins and a 5spd trany that adds another 300 lb and a np205 adding another 150 lb . I put lots of miles on and I do notice the front end wears out faster.
Also newer (long stroke) engines start easier in cooler weather and run cleaner and they don't need glow plugs.
I have a manifold heater in my cummins 5.9 but never did hook it up, and it starts down to -0 f
Detroit are attention getters when it comes to makeing noise and no one realy sees the oil leaks anyway . But everyone stares when on a cold day your in a wallmart parking lot with a can of either trying to get this thing started.
just my opinion good luck

I have a project too! I have a step van that has been converted to a detroit 4-53 and was hoping to install it in my 70 pickup. Does anybody know about fuel economy that I might be able to achieve with a tall gear ratio? What about weight problems. This motor weighs about 1100 lbs. Will that be a problem for my stock dana 44 open knuckle? I have an eaton rear axle and imagine it could take just about any abuse I could give it. Any input?

Gentlemen

With regards to converting an 80's Ford truck (or any other for that matter to Perkins or Cummins diesel I have this to offer:

- remove entire front clip (fenders, rad. support, etc.).
- accept the fact that you have to tunnel into the firewall for engine clearance.
- manufacture a body lift for much needed clearance of bellhousing and big ass transmission
- avoid factory overdrive transmissions, they don't withstand this kind of torque for long.
- consider heavy 4-spd. transmission with separate aftermarket overdrive such as U.S. Gear sells, or find 5-spd. Clark w/O.D. from medium duty truck.
- if you can find one, Spicer made cute little 3-speed auxilliary transmissions with under, direct and overdrive. Models 5531 and 5831 (I think) are what your looking for, letter deignation after the mod. no. determine the ratios, not all have overdrive. When I say "cute little" I mean they were used in highway tractors of the late 50's such as the Mack B61 and can be made to fit under one ton trucks if you want it bad enough and can handle two shifters in the cab.
- use the biggest clutch you can fit.
- I prefer the Perkins diesel based on farm tractor experience: full power (or close to it) 12-16+ hours a day, no problem for 6600 hours and counting. Have many Perkins on the farm, all problem free and easy enough to find.
- if you have to change axle ratio, try to use a G.M. 14 bolt full floating rear axle as it has a fully supported pinion unlike Dana 70 which can swallow its pinion, causing bad things to happen.
- try to use large U-joints when you make your driveshafts, if you can't, use the expensive kind the drag racers use.

Hope this helps someone.

Zoltan

I had a 1973 Ford F-350 with a 453 Detroit Diesel with the Ford Transmission in it. A hell of a conversion. I loved the sound, but I wasn't impressed about the lack of power and I had to watch EGT when I was pulling.

On the other hand have a big truck with a 6V53, beautiful engine. I wouldn't know much about the conversion, but that would be a dream to me to have a 6V53 in a 1 ton.

And I beg to differ with Allan, the sound of a Detroit starting in the cold is the most wonderful sound known to man. Just give it a whiff of ether, and it'll fire.

turn,turn,turn,roar...roar...roar...roar...roar...roar...roar...roar...roar!

That's why they call it a screaming jimmy!

When it stops leaking, it's out of oil!

In reply to guy who was unhappy with the power of 4-53 detroit in his ford. Assuming you have n engine ( 4 valve head and 21-1 comp.)try putting bigger injectors in and turning up the rpms. I have been told jimmys will live well up to 3500 rpm. I have a tractor with 453 N70 injectors running around 3100 rpm that I like to think puts out about 140 h.p. and sounds like its got 300!!
If you want more power look at adding turbo That should be good for another 30 or 40 easy.
as far as starting in cold weather I live in area of canada where temp. two weeks ago was minus 32 c
and that detroit would start where lots of others would not! As long as you have the high comp. engine and its not worn out they start amazingly well.
