I have a 2002 Duramax diesel with the Allison transmission and get about 17 to 21 mpg depending on what I'm hauling. I currently have about 30k mileage and the fuel efficency keeps getting better! When I first bought it the fuel mileage was unimpressive, but don't let that fool you. A few people I have talked to say it gets better with age, and it does.

Well I got 18.5 mpg from 5,500 miles through 28,500 on my 03 duramax and then it dropped to 14 mpg I have had it in 8 times and they don't know how to fix it. I am at 38,000 and no sign of things improving. If I tow my 20' inclosed haulmark trailer even empty my mileage dropps to 10 MPG. I would look at other options ( I am looking toward ford.)

I have a 02 2500 Duramax 4x4. I get around 17 miles per gallon. I have a 38 5th wheel. I pulled it out to California last year at about 70mph on the interstate. I weighed at a truck stop. The total was 20,680#'s. I got 10 miles per gallon the whole time. I don't know what these guys are talking about with the no power thing either. I have heard all kinds of different stories about the duramax. One being "my duramax stock don't sure don't pull as good as my old powerstroke that had a chip in it". Makes alot of sense huh!! Trust Chevy all the way!

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD Duramax with about 90,000 on it now and have checked several tanks on trips at 21 mpg but mostly get from 17 to 20 depending on the type of roads.

My Duramax seems to like the two lane highways better than highballing on the interstates. My 21 mpg tanks were obtained on smaller highways where I held my speed to 55 - 60 mph. Running 75 - 80+ mph on interstates quickly drops my milage to about 18 mpg.

These mileage figures were obtained with no trailer. I pull a trailer quite a bit since I do some local excavating work and pull a 6000 pound Bobcat on a 3400 pound dump trailer. That puts my gross up to about 22,000. I seldom haul more than that but do see a slip here for 23,740 gross for some limestone that we hauled last week. I don't check fuel milage when I'm towing as their are so many different types and weights of loads.

I had a 2001 2500 with a 6.0 liter small block gasoline engine and the BEST I ever got on a trip was 14.7 mpg (no trailer). It only got about 9 or 10 mpg for my local driving around here, my duramax gets 17 -18 in the same local driving (no hard-core city driving). That 6.0 liter gas engine had plenty of power but could sure SUCK fuel !!!

I've had absolutely NO problems with the Duramax but my Allison tranny went out at 65,000 miles about 75 miles from home. This resulted in a tranny repair bill plus a $275 towing bill.

I love my Duramax but am not too proud of my Allison tranny . . .

I am a dealer Deisel tech and I have a 04 LLY duramax there is no way anyone is getting 27 MPG with theese even empty! Best I ever have gotten is 20 and thats babying it. If you are useing the trip computer forget it calculate for yourself and see what you come up with. If you have it chipped same deal the aftermarket chip screws up the factory program and throws the trip computer way off, When I have my power programer in at 100hp setting trip computer says 31.2 MPG at 85+ MPH NO WAY NOT Hapening I don't care what kind of deisel I have worked on them and owned them for years.

I had a 2001 Crew Cab 2WD Duramax, and I was getting 22 in town, 20 if I was showing off. 22-25 on the road @ 65-70.

I now have a 2003 Duramax Crew Cab 4wd, and the first 36000 I was getting 18-20 in town showing off or not. I also pull a Jayco 33ft 5th wheel, (11000lbs) and I get 14 @ 70-75 on mostly flat driving. Boise to Mcall ID 12mpg, Boise to Phx, 15.5mpg, Boise to Portland 13mpg same speed.

I have added an AERO Turbine Muffler to my truck, and my mileage has increase 3-6mpg. 3 pulling, 6 not pulling average driving. 65-70mph.

Check out AERO it adds an average of 80-90 HP, and increases mileage 2-8mpg.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the problem that I've been having with the mileage on my truck.

Soon after I bought my '04 2500HD I got 18 mpg on a trip to colorado and have never seemed to get the same mileage since. I've heard from lots of people that they get 20-21 mpg with this same truck when unloaded on the highway. I have noticed it more recently on a similar trip to CO where I got 14 mpg. Same kind of driving at about 75-80 mph. I actually have notice that there are times when it runs like the good old days where it seems like the engine works without effort to maintain highway speeds. I've had it in twice now to the dealer. They have been very willing to help and explain what they have diagnosed as two possible causes to the problem, however the problem persists.

First time they found a connector C-107 wire C6 pink ING. Basically a wire in the ignition system was causing the system to go between 1 and 12 V. So there was definitely something wrong. A week later...similar gas mileage problem

Second time they said the K&N Filter had oil residue coming off it that was coating the Mass Air Flow Sensor. They replaced the filter and cleaned the sensor. As far as I can tell, 4 days later its still the same.

Currently I'm getting about 13.5 mpg on the highway at 80 mph, 15 mpg at 75 mph, and about 14.5 overall. I have 22,000 miles on it.
Any of this sound familiar?

I have noticed once I get it to speed and set the cruise it will buck ever so slightly. most passengers don't notice it riding around. feels like a small bump in the road, but there isn't.

Let me know if you know of anything. I want to bring it back to the dealer, but I don't know what to tell them...other than what I've already told them. They say everything is working fine, but it clearly isn't. I used to get better gas mileage in my 95 GMC Z-71 gas engine with 175K miles!!
Thanks in advance

I get 26mpg empty and about 16 to 18 pulling my 27 ft travel trailer. I am told I would get about 2 mpg more with a upgrade chip not sure if it is worth 700 bucks though. I have more than enough power without it also.

OK BOYS, heres the truth! I have 2 Duramax's and 2 Dodges all are 02 all have about 90'000 on them all are geared the same, they all pull the same exact trailers! and let me tell you, those Chevy Trucks are NOT IT!!!! them Dodges run all over them things! loaded or not,and for mpg 27 mpg LAUGH, NO WAY! you guys sound like little kids, mines better than yours. This guy is asking for his own good, why would you lie about this?
the Chevy get between 12-17
the Dodge get between 10-19
These trucks pull trailers all the time, they only drop trailers for service every 5,000 miles.
Temp makes a differnce on the Dodge,s mpg.But they are more reliable,

Have 2003 ExtCab Longbed D/A. Unloaded I get approx. 20-21 MPG. Truck has 31000 miles. Truck is cuurrently at dealer to replace injectors. Symptoms were starting problems and drop in fuel mileage. These engines are known to have injector problems. A change was made in late 2004 production to an improved injector. All 2005's have the new injectors. Time will tell. Chev is offering 7 yr. 200,000 warranty on my repaired motor.

Thanks for the input. I have a feeling its a fuel delivery (injector) problem as well. Especially since I intermittantly get better mileage and power. I can tell when I'm getting less power and efficiency from the info center on the dash as well as a very slight hesitation when cruising (especially when I get on a hill and the engine has to work harder to get up the hill) I just took another trip of about 1500 miles and got 15.5 mpg over the entire trip; 111 miles of it I got 18 mpg. I tested it by calculating the mileage myself and the dashboard readouts were exactly the same as my calculations. I also noticed that the engine temperature went down some when it was running more efficiently as well. (it runs at approx. 205 degrees when not running well as opposed to about 197 degrees when it is running well)
When I took the truck in last time Chevy said the injectors show no codes when hooked to the computer. Ed, Any idea what lead to chevy swapping out the injectors? You know warranty work...they won't do it unless there is an obvious problem. How do I tell if my truck is an 2004.5 model with the new injectors?

Hey,

Lots of discrepancy in what you guys report.
Anyway I'm getting 19-20 with mine. It got 15 towing a trailblazer - brand new '04 duramax 2wd silverado. Seemingly strange, the truck likes it when I use more pedal, when I keep the rpm's below 2k I get worse milage. Next purchase will be that K&N air filter! Where do you get a good deal on those?

I love the duramax especially the part where the 20 cans of marbles seems to be missing. Also it really moves quick! Makes the 5.7L looks like a dog. You can sit there and outrun lots of folks with a load of material, dogs, tools and camper tops.

Finally I will report the camper top that I had riding on seemed to increase my milage, despite the extra 400 lbs or so. As beat as it is, I could hardly believe it decreases wind drag.

I figure if you are not getting better than 18 mpg then take it to the dealer and threaten to quit making your payments, because they have got something wrong.

Aaron

Cliff, I posted a message on 2/24 titled Duramax Injectors that described my problem. You may want to check out that post.

The truck never set a code. It finally wouldn't start, so GM had to do something. Chev changed the RPO code for the engine so if you take it to the dealer they can tell by the VIN if you have the new injectors.

I have a 2500HD Ext.Cab longbed 4x4 D/A with stock 3.73 gear. I drive 65 to 68 MPH. On fairly level interstates with cruise on I get 20-21 MPG unloaded. I agree with Aaron and would be asking the dealer to explain anything under 18 in the conditions I described above.

Guys and gals be very careful with this injector problem. This is a very very expensive thing to repair out of warranty.

Took it to a chevy dealer and they gave him sticker for his ford and was going to make ford fix it. He now has a 05 duramax and loves it. Every one I talk to loves them.

Hi,
Ive been reading the posts and have been kicking around the idea of buying a new Duramax really only for the fuel milage.. You guys that are getting in the 20's mpg range are they 2 or 4wd,Crew cab,Dually and do they have a towing axle ratio different than the others?? I cant see spending 40k on a diesel truck that gets 12-15 mpg.

Wondering if this is a normal oil pressure for this engine. This is my 1st diesel and am very happy with it. I did get between 18.6 & 19.3MPG running between 75 & 80 MPH.
