Message: I have just acquired an 85 Fleetwood Motorhome with a 6.2 GM Diesel. It still runs good as far as I can tell, I'm more familar with gas than diesel. From looking out on the web I have found there are many improvements that can boost performance, I.E. water injection, exaust, different type of breather. This beast has 93k on it now. Would it be worth it to boost it up. Or should I save it and stick the money into a new block when the time comes? Also what maintence should be performed and at what interval?
Thanks

Have you checked to the wirering going to you hot plugs. If not you should because my father had a 6.2 that started hard and we canged the glowplugs and it still started hard come to find out there is a fusable link in the wire going to each glow plug. Quick test just take a test light and hook one end on battery ground and unplug the wire and touch the test light to the wire. And turn the key on to turn the glow plug on and it should light. It only take one bad one to make a hard start.

If I were you I wouldn't bother putting to much into you 6.2. There already noted for having crank troubles. And there is a good reason for this they have a 22:1 compression ratio and if you start putting aftermarket parts on for mor power you might break your crank.

4/28/2003 18:13:59 | RE: 86 CHEVY 6.2 DIESEL
Message: Chevy diesels of this vintage have a thermal switch which prevents the glow plugs from comming on when it thinks the engine is over 125 degrees. Later models changed this to an "allways on" switch.
This switch is virtually inaccessable on the back of the right (passenger) side head up against the fire wall.
Once you find the wires to this switch and confirmed that you have the right ones with a jumper, cut off the plug and splice them together and the glow plugs will allways come on.

Message: I have a 84 6.2 and have driven another one for quite some time. The best way to get around the glow plug issue is to buy a block heater and plug it in when at home. This will save your glow plugs. Also your engine will last a lot longer due to it already being warm prior to driving it or starting it for that matter. Block heater only cost about 22.00(us) and is very easy to install.

Message: THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT. THAT ENGINE WHEN NEW, ONLY HAS ABOUT 130HP. YOU ARE ASKING IT TO MOVE ABOUT 5 TONNES. YOU WONT GET MUCH FASTER THAN THIS UNLESS GOING DOWNHILL WITH A TAIL WIND.
DO NOT TOW THIS TRAILER WITH THE TRUCK IN OVERDRIVE (IF YOU HAVE OVERDRIVE), RUNNING IN 3RD WILL REV THE ENGINE A LOT MORE, BUT IT WONT HARM ANYTHING. THE ENGINE WONT SPIN FAST ENOUGH TO DAMAGE ANYTHING, THIS REDLINES AT ABOUT 4000 RPM ANYWAY.
I JUST PUT A NEW ENGINE IN MY TRUCK, I ALSO TOW ABOUT THE SAME WEIGHT. WITH THE OLD ENGINE, 60 WAS THE FASTEST IT EVER WENT, USUALLY COULD BARELY GO 55MPH.
WITH THE NEW 6.2 DIESEL ENGINE, I WAS ABLE TO TOW ABOUT 65 CONSISTANTLY, IT WAS A LITTLE BETTER, BUT NOT BY MUCH.
JUST DRIVE IN 3RD GEAR, PUT ON A TRANS COOLER (A BIG ONE) AND DEAL WITH THE SLOWNESS. DRIVING LIKE THIS WONT HARM THE ENGINE AT ALL, IT IS A VERY TOUGH ENGINE.
LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS

We discouvered there was a wrong flywheel installed.
For some reason there was a petrol flywheel installed. And that is wrong, there is no extra weight inside a petrol flywheel someone told me.
I need a official diesel flywheel. I hope you can you tell me where I can get one ore give some partnumbers ore specifications?
Are they the same like inside a Pickup truck with hand gear?
Ore do I need a marine flywheel. (My sterndrive is Volvo Penta (280)).Can you tell me where You bougt your flywheels?

Message: I am thinking about buying a 1985 GMC 3/4 truck that was a 6.2 Now it is a 454 but there lies the questions. Number one they did not convert the brake booster, number two they did not change the stall converter. It doesn't feel like there is a 454 in there, it feels like it is towing a boat. So my questions are does the stall converter need to be changed / the power brake booster and anything else?

Message: I have a Chev 6.2 diesel that I bought without the glow plugs working. The previous owner used ether to start it all the time, but I don't think that's a good idea. I replaced the glow plugs but they won't light up. The relay engages ok but on the connector to the glow plug controller at the back of the engine has the wire going to pin 2 cut. I can't figure out where that goes and can't get a wire drawing. Can you tell me where I can get a manual for this engine (other than $$ from GM) or can you tell me where pin 2 connects and is there anything else I'm missing here?

It Looks like it is comming from the top of the engion and running down the side of the oil pan and also it seems to be comming off the passanger side of the engion and hitting off the right side of the exaust pipe? I was wondering if there was a problem with the filters or the pump?
