Subject: Powerstroke fuel leak
Message: Mt 2000 Ford powerstroke is leaking diesel out of the drain line from the fuel filter. I have been told to replace the O-rings that connect the valve to the filter. How will this stop the leak? My leak is thru the valve not around it.

Message: I have just noticed the same thing this morning on my 99 Powerstroke. Fuel leaking from the drain line. It dripped while warming up at idle. I drove 20 miles to work. I checked it again. It had stopped. I have 95,000 miles and have never had this problem before.

Message: I have the same problem with my 2000 Powerstroke. Leaks while cold and warming up then slows down. Although it seems to be getting worse we are smelling diesel fuel while the heater is on.

Message: I have the same problem. 1999 PS diesel 100,000 miles, Just noticed a leak last week. It only seemed to leak when the engine is warming up and is worse when cooler temperature outside. The leaks stops once the truck is driving. If driving for extended time (a couple hours or so), it doesn't leak at all after that. I will let you know exactly the cause in a couple of days, once it gets out of the shop.

NO MORE LEAK: I took the truck to the mechanic that repairs all of our trucks. He changed the drain valve mechanism on the rear (firewall side) of the fuel filter canister. We havn¡¯t received a bill for that yet but I know it only took 1 hour or less time to replace and the part is small (probably not expensive)

my '99 PSD has started leaking in a similar way to what you all are describing. the truck has 217,000 miles on it without a hitch, and now my fuel is leaking and my water pump is leaking from the shaft seal... not bad, considering. anyone know how much the O-rings cost? are they dealer only parts? does anyone have an expanded view of the filter housing that would show how to take it apart and put it back together? I have already tried tightening the torx bolts, and it stopped the leak for a while.but now it's back, and stinking like diesel bad.

I have a 99 powerstroke 110,000 miles. Just went to pull my truck in the garage 10 minutes ago and noticed a little bit of fuel on the driveway, opened the hood and the whole top of the engine is a puddle of fuel. O-rings, tighten filter housing, and replacing filter are on my list of things to do for tommorow, yeah on christmas any other suggestions if that doesnt work? Thanks

The dealer only sells the whole valve, you can however buy the O rings for $6 at this site (bottom of page):

I just changed my fuel filter on my 03 6.0 liter diesel. The in-line filter is leaking. Does that filter only fit one way, its in the right direction and the cap is on good. What a pain that was.

I have a '97, 7.3, but I'm sure this would hold as a possibility for a newer engine as well. I started smelling fuel yesterday and found the fuel vacumn switch on the side of the filter housing was dripping. Switch was $66 and the leak is fixed. 3 minute fix once you have the part. Good luck!

My 1996 has just started leaking fuel on the top of the manifold. The dealer replaced the fuel filter and the O ring under the fuel filter housing cap. Well it now is leaking again and puddling on top of the intake manifold, not sure where it is coming from this time. Any help would be appreciated.

Those O-rings are made of a different "Nitride" compound commonly found on tipical O-rings. You cannot substitute ordinary O-rings, because the Diesel fuel will eat them up. If you insist, go to your local Caterpillar dealer and they can get you the proper O-rings. That is not the only place, shop around!

Your local IH/Navistar parts department should be able to copy a breakdown picture of what you are looking for. Check with them. If they are busy, tell them you will wait until they have a moment. Go in person. Don't call or email them.
