Subject: 6.2 Diesel
Message: I have a 1982 Coachmen Caravan Mini Motorhome on a Chevy chasis with a 6.2 Litre diesel engine that cranks and runs good, but the glow plug light keeps cycleing on and off the whole time it is running. I was wondering if this is normal or is there a problem? Thanks.

Message: Hi Joe
Its a problem!! If you let it continue you may burn out your glow plugs.
The fault depends on the system you have. Does your motor have a round thingy amout 1.25" in dia with lots of wires hanging out on the LH head at the rear?

Message: When/if the output sense line from the alternator
is open and/or voltage low to pin-1 of the glow
plug controller switch (rear of LH head), the
glow plug solenoid will cycle indefinetely. This
is a common problem with basic idiot light veh's
and may be indicating a bad alternator, OR, if
someone puts a 'ONE-WIRE' alternator on the veh.

Will the engine be able to take a loaded bed, while towing a Civic right away, or will I have to break the engine in? I'll put around 1000 miles on it before moving, but probably not much more.

Message: Hi Joe,
I had the same stupid problem on my 82 Itasca diesel untill I burned all 8 plugs. Also I found out that I had 6volt plugs. I replaced with 12 volt heat plugs and completely discconnected the GM heating/cycling nightmare. I located the main relay that puts power to the plugs and connected a
manual momentary switch from the relay's coil to ground so...now to start I do the following:
1.-Turn starting switch on
2.-Push the momentary switch on and count to 8
3.-Turn the starter if it does not start at the
third engine rotation I push the swith again and count to 4, starter again. In cold weather you might have to do this 3 times. After the engine is hot, to start you need to push the switch and count to 5 and it will start every time.
In short words I overrided the entire automatic circuitry and do it by hand like in the old times
never had a burnt plug again.

7/07/2003 17:02:21 | TIMING 6.2 Diesel
Message: Please I need help. I understand that to time the 6.2 engine. The 3 bolts holding the plate at the end of the injector pump must be loosen. I did this but I can not move the pump either clock or counterclock wise. The engine was serviced before and when I got it back it was very advanced, the mechanic corrected this later but it is too retarded now, this fellow is no longer available and his boss could not move the pump. Question: are there more than 3 bolts to loosen the plate?, (I notice that the entire assembly must rotate including the injector pipes at the rear of the pump.) Am I doing something wrong? Please advise you can write to: Tadeo1_us@yahoo.com The engine is in a 22feet Itasca motorhome and I love it. Thanks

7/09/2003 00:11:52 | RE: 6.2 Diesel timing
Message: There are only 3 nuts holding the injection pump to the front casing. Make sure they are all very loose before trying to adjust the timing. Also make sure that the pump is loose from the casing by moving it away slightly. The reason why they are so tight is due to the clock pattern of the injector lines on the end of the pump. It can sometimes take a seemingly excessive amount of force to turn the pump slightly. If that does not work then try loosening the injector line clamps. If again it won't move then you have some some serious issues and will have to take the intake manifold off and loosenthe lines before moving the timing. If you indeed have to loosen the lines from the pump then you will have to bleed them when you are done.

Message: I have a '92 chevy vandura, 6.2 L diesel. I too have had the glow plug coming on and off, especially at stoplights and lower rpms. It also stops after running on the freeway at the stoplight at the exit. And it got worse after I put some bigger tires on the rear. So much so that I think I wore the solenoid out. Its sitting in the driveway but when I turn the key over the glowplug light doesn't light up and it doesn't turn over at all. What do you think starter or solenoid? Expensive parts either one. Any advice or thoughts appreciated.

I first thought it was a transmission problem but have ruled that out, any thoughts? I am fairly unfamiliar with the 6.2.

Message: Al Green-it definitely sounds like the EGR valve.Their not cheap for such a small simple part, but easy to remove from the engine(2 bolts).
I actually took my EGR valve apart with some 'channel lock' pliers. The unit is 2 pieces pressed together with an overlap on one piece.I bent the overlap lap back all the way around and got it apart. After cleaning,I lightly siliconed(the blue Permatex brand )all of the pump 'membrane',let it cure and carefully reassembled the unit with a small hammer and channel locks. Its been working for 80,000 miles and I saved $150.LOL
Pat and Kent-It sounds like your injection pumps need updated. The original OEM pump seals had a tendency to 'go bad' due to the rubber seals that desinegrated in the pump and would CLOG various mechanisms in the pump/fuel system. The rebuilding is'nt easy and your best bet is to buy one rebuilt. At $450 a pop they ain't cheap but you will notice a remarkable difference and they'll last much longer.
I bought a 1982 GMC Jimmy with 6.2diesel with 250,000 miles 3 years ago.It started blowing white smokeand running crappy so I replaced pump, injectors, glow plugs at around $1000 when I could have just replaced pump for $450.You can have your injectors tested for a couple bucks apiece at any -worthwhile- diesel repair facility.
My old 6.2 has close to 350,000 miles on it now and is still going strong and dependable, summer or winter.
Buy a Chiltons repair manual for 6.2 diesels. The $20.00 is worth it if you plan on keeping it for awhile.
Hope this helps.

Message: Jose, It is a GM Diesel. The first GM made was a 5.7L; bascially a small-block converted to diesel. There were many problems with the 5.7L as they were not designed to be a Diesel, just converted from Gas to Diesel. The 6.2L is based on a Big block, but designed to be a Diesel, not just converted from Gas to Diesel like the 5.7L. The 6.2L is a solid design; it was chosen to be used in the HMMVs ("Hummers") until GM replaced the 6.2L with the 6.5L Diesel. It is argued that the 6.2L was actually a better engine than the 6.5L.

Message: I have intalled a 6.2L non turbo in my 85 Jeep CJ7. I do not have a radiator on yet nor am I using any computer. I have been trying to just start the engine to make sure it runs before I put the body tub back on and move on to the rest of the project. The engine was overhauled when I bought it but I had to change the crankshafts to use my SM 465. I have bled the filter and injection lines. It wouldnt start. Now when engine is cranked it starts dripping from between the fuel filter canister and mounting block. When I purge the filter It begins with a solid stream then becomes foamy. I have tried wd-40, no difference. I do not have a working glow plug system yet, that would come after I knew it would run I thought, the temperture here in Texas is around 80. Any thoughts would be greatly apreciated. I believe the fuel solenoid is working because it clicks when th 12 volt lead is inctalled and fuel is getting to the injectors.

Also there is a loud knocking from the top of the engine, and sometimes lots of black and at others lots of white smoke...a problem with the injector pump ? I could only get hold of injector nozzles for a 6.7 litre, when the pop off pressure for the original ones became seriously reduced...could this be a problem ? I would greatly appreciate any advice

Message: Remove the air cleaner and pour about 1/4 cup of clean diesel fuel down the intake. It'll start it easier with less wear on the starter motor.Since its had an new electrical fuel pump installed,it should have sufficient fuel pressure although it had a mechanical pump originally.Your fuel filter on the firewall should have a drain plug at the bottom of it.Open it and be sure fuel is coming out.
You also might want to try removing the fuel line from the injection pump and see if fuels pump out of the line when the engine is turned over.Put the line in a milk jug or something so it does'nt spray all over the engine.

Message: Someone asked about the horse power rating. On the air cleaner it says 155 and in the chiltons it says 130 so between 130-155hp. That may explain why it works hard at pulling anything with some weight say a skid steer and heavy trailer. Its a friends truck, 1985 1 ton 4x4 pickup with 195,000 miles. Use 100% synthetic oil in the crankcase for easier winter starting because you need 200 rpm or else no start. That cold conventional oil is thick and will draw ungodly amounts of amps out of your batteries. Take your cables and clean with baking soda and water or some coca-cola blow off with air and dress with some battery terminal spray protector stuff, mine was a clear solvent like product. Tighten snuggly.

Message: Kevin, Bogging a bit under load on a grade is normal for the normally aspirated 6.2L Diesel. Blue smoke is burning oil; white smoke (steam) is water in the cylinders. Both of which would require a rebuild. Black smoke is unburned fuel and is normal if it doesn't put out the smoke when not under heavy load; it is because the engine is sending as much fuel to the engine as possible to try to develop the power being demanded. You can adjust down the fuel delivery rate inside the fuel pump/distributor if you think it is a problem. The procedure is simple and takes only about fifteen munutes. Or, you can pay a mechanic to do it.

I have had the same problem with my 84 Suburban. It would come on sometimes and not others. usually when I was away from home and in a suit! I finally wired a ground wire to the solonoid on the fender well. (closest small terminal to the driver) THe ground wire goes into the cab to a universal starter button on the dash and then to ground. This enables me to manually control the glow plugs. One should be careful not to hold the button down too long as you could damage the glow plugs. I just count off 6 seconds and start. Does anyone out there have any reason this should not be done???

It persisted for years until I decided to investigate and found that the primary filter was situated between the fuel tank and lift pump. A diesel pump mechanic told me to get the primary filter on the pressure side of the lift pump. After adding some more fuel line and brass fuel fittings I now have the primary and secondary filters between the lift pump and injection pump, haven't had a problem since. Take a look at your fuel lines and if the filter is between the tank and lift/fuel pump, try changing it around. Hope this helps.

Message: Sounds like you've got an air lock at the injector pump. Check the primary and secondary fuel filters (the big oil filter looking thing on the firewall and the smaller attached to the rear of the air horn) first to make sure they're completely full. If not simply get some diesel and pour it in the filter, just be careful screwing them back on as it's easy to make a mess. You can try to start it after doing that. It should work as I've done this a couple of times myself. If is still fails to start you'll have to loosen each injector line at the pump slightly (one at a time) to bleed the air from the lines. It's a pain but a little air in the line can make for a poor running truck. Good luck.

Message: Charles,
When you built the engine did you use an assembly lube in the gears of the pump? The pump should at the least be well lubed before installation so it will be "primed" I like to use a light grease and pack the gears. Before starting crank the engine until you have oil pressure. YOu can also fill the oil filter to cut down on the cranking time. I don't think a high flow pump will help you cool the engine if the radiator is not adequite. It it is not up to the task, you may need to find a good aluminum double pass. Aluminum is MUCH more efficient at cooling. You can also increase it's abiltily to cool by having the radiator coated with a thermal dispersant. Someone who does engine coatings can help you with this. Hope this helps.
Guys, I would also be interested to know how one bleeds the fuel system on first start up.

Message: ok the way i would do this is pull the return line check valve out of injector pump and i would fill pump with diesel fuel this will lub injector pump then crack open one injector at a time and crank engine till you see air and fuel comming out of fitting. But remember only to crank engine only for 30 seconds and let starter cool for ten minuts in between cranks then once you get fuel to one injector start on the next one. this may take a couple of hours, but it will save the starter. as far as exhaust manifold gaskets i have put a lot of motors together with out them and no harm was ever done

For a couple months now the plugs (and lamp on the Instrument panel) will come on sometimes and then not. When they do warm the engine turns over fine. I have the Factory manual and I am assuming it must be the relay and/or a 20 amp fuse mentioned in the Manual. The relay has now shut down completely....(the block heater has been my only way to start in the morning)....without the "clicking" noise the relay made I am having a HECK of a time locating this darn relay. ANY help as to the location of this thing would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!

Message: Andy,
I thought about it more...when you say the engine won't start for half-hour after shutting down, just a few questions:
Does it turn over? If not, the starter is over-heating and needs to be replaced or insulated from exhaust.
If it turns over but won't start...is the engine compartment excessively hot? If so, may be vapor lock in fuel lines or filters.
If neither, you may have a bigger problem...see previous message from me (above).

Message: Fresh batteries and new/rebuilt starters work wonders for the 6.2.Buying used vehicles with the 6.2 diesel REQUIRES a good starting/charging system. If ya don't have either, your not gonna get the results ya want. Many on this POST should'nt be buying a 6.2 equipped vehicle if they expect spark plugs and carburaters.Owning a old 6.2 diesel requires something more than a 'owners manual'.Buy a MANUAL specifically for the 6.2 and if you can read instructions, you'll save yourself alot of time and expense.Free info is good, but illustrations and explanations from the pro's is better.

Message: OOPS.Had another thought. (dangerous I know) The engine I removed from my suburban for low oil pressure had a geared starter on it different from my 1983... The engine was from an 1984. MAN! what a difference in cranking speed! I don't know if this was new in 84 or what it came from but I definatly am keeping it!! I recently felt perhaps my batteries were getting weak although still starting every time...When I checked one of the battery cables had somehow loosened and fallen off. I was starting on ONE battery. Try that with the non-geared starter!
This is for you guys having starting trouble.

After bragging about my 6.2 (one should never brag) it comes back to haunt me. I drove to Las Vegas and ran it around some. Went out to go home and no start!!! ARRRRRRGH! Glow plugs have power, pour a little fuel in the air intake, little puffs of white smoke, but not even a burp. I had the injector pump rebuilt 2 years ago. Any input will be appreciated !!!!! It seems to crank plenty fast and have a normal sound but I am wondering about the timing chain as it ran fine before turning it off. ALso, if any of you know of a Trustworthy 6.2 genious in Las Vegas please let me know.

When I called for the part they (store) said that the engine did not show one listed. Can you please help me with this?

Message: Ramsey,
Replace the Glow plug controller. It is a cylinder-looking thing near the firewall on the drivers side of the engine with 5 or six wires coming out of it. It's a little over $100 at the dealership.
Ann,
I think you are using the wrong scanner or reading it wrong. Diesel's don't have Throttle-bodies, they are direct injected. Throttle-bodies are on many gasoline engines.

Message: Hello guys, Newbie here with a few questions. I know my gas GM's inside out, but my only diesel experience is with a 50 year old Massey 135-3 that hasn't broken down yet. It's time to retire my old reliable (GMC) Grumman P-30 with the 292 inline gas. I want to buy a more modern version surplus from the post office with the 6.2L diesel but have so far (by word of mouth) heard nothing but bad things about 6.2's. Cracked heads, glow plugs burning off and falling into cylinders, etc... Was there really anything wrong with these engines or are these stories a product of abuse and/or neglect by owners? What is the expected service life of these engines? Any help, anecdotes would be a big help. Are some better than others or were they all the same? And finally - How do you tell if a 6.2 diesel is any good? On a gas engine; compression, leakdown, plug "reading", exhaust, and overall sound will (or at least can) give a fair indication to the condition of the internals, but on the diesels I have heard, the clatter at idle even on a known good (Hino) engine sound like worn wrist pins, rod, and piston skirt knock. How can a diesel novice get an indication of the overall worthiness of a used engine? P.S. The ones I've been looking at have about 200,000 Km (120,000 miles) on them. Again, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Message: I live in Utah and own a 84 6.2 Diesel truck that I use for my landscaping/snow removal business. I have had nothing but problems with the fuel system. I have been religious in my efforts to fuel at major stations & using Standine fuel treatment at every stop, but for some reason I am always plugging up the filter system. I have the stock filter system on my truck, the one that looks like a tin foil bread pan that is attached to the firewall of the truck. I will be driving and she will just quit on my. I have to end up flushing the system and replacing the filter before I am able to get it up and running again.
Is there a better filter system out there or do I have a different problem. Also does any one have any further information about my current fuel system and how it functions?
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I might need to do to help my problem?
Last year I dropped & cleaned the fuel tanks.
My 6.2 runs great when I am able to get fuel to the system but it is supper temperamental

I drove it another 20 miles and it started dying. I put a new fuel filter in and it ran 1000% better but still hesitates really bad between 50 - 70. Also a really odd thing is when I take a sharp curve to the right, it clears up. When I make a hard curve to the left it dies or gets worse. It has 150K on it. Injector pump has never been replaced, do I need a new one?
