I haven't seen much in the toyota swapping thing, but as far as I'd try would be a Cummins 4BT,Nissan(like ones used in old Scouts), or even a toyota diesel

Message: While in Thailand last year I noticed most small pickups were diesels, including Toyotas. They said it was because of the long life under hard use. When I say hard use - they do things with a small pickup that we do with a Mack truck.
Can any of you share how (or where) I can order a Toyota diesel engine? Thanks!

Message: Well.. I got my motor, and I will try to put it in this weekend. I noticed that the fly wheel on the diesel is a standard (clutch). I have an automatic transmission in my 4runner. Does the gearing need to be changed for diesel (torque & RPM)?
Does anyone know if my fly wheel on my gas V6 will fit on my diesel or any other swap problems?
Thanks, Ryan

Good day Sir/ Madam:
I have this Toyota Prado SX manufactured in Japan, after converting it to Philippine Standard right hand drive, the engine is now having problem, Check engine always lite up, lost almost 50% power, and produce fuel knock sound.. fuel also consumed a lot and black smoke emiting a lot.. in other words, I believe EFI is overfeeding the engine with fuel.
Can I calibrate my injection pump with my computer? it has a 2L-TE Engine.. what do I need to calibrate it??
Can I use my computer to calibrate the injection pump, with just using some socket wire from Toyota to fit the diagnose terminal under the hood, have the cd for the software.. to calibrate it?? really fed up with this EFI.. choosing between 3L or 1KZ to replace my 2L.
Thank you very much for taking time..
Hope and pray you can help me with this long problem of mine. Best regards.
GOD's Blessing on you.
Yours truly,
rudy santos

I never ended up converting my 4runner. I ended up getting a '81 pickup that was already a diesel. I traded my 3L for a 2L (plus some $) and dropped the 2L into my '81.
There are some shops that do gas to diesel conversions, but its a lot easier if they are manuals. I gave up on converting my 4runner because it was too difficult to convert automatics.
If you do decide to do it... go with the 3L or a 2L turbo. That 2L is good enough for 2wd pickups.

It is not that difficult to do a convertion on a Toyota if you do get the right advice. A lot of the engines, transmissions and parts are interchangeable. We do have Toyota diesel engines since the 1980,s while you in the USA only have gasoline engines. I can supply any part on 2L-II,3L and 5L at a very competative price. If somebody needs advice or parts ,new or used, feel free to contact me for a quote.

In Canada, Toyota pickups [from 1981 to about 1988] were available in Diesel. The earlier years were mostly 2 wdr.,non turbo. I believe the 2.4T was available from 1985 to 1987, in four wheel drive, and two wheel drive. Although rare, I recently saw a 1988 Four runner limited ed. 2.4T. Four wheel drive. Very nice!

acme adapters in oregon makes toyota to vw diesel conversions. you need $575, the adapter kit includes a spacer for behind the fly wheel, a new fly wheel for the vw motor, and the spacer for the bell housing. a very clean package. we have a 1989 4x4 to work on its very important you use a 22r bell housing. these are different from the sixers.. we 've collected the parts but haven't done the conversion yet. too many other projects. the guy to contact is jeff.

Word to the wise the Toyota 2L-T engines have weak heads, if it is overheated once it is 99.9% likely that the head will crack. I have worked on many toyota diesels here in Japan and have replaced far too many 2L heads. The non turbo 3L engines don't seem to have any problems.

I'm having problems finding the samuari diesel group and acme adapter.
I wouldn't mind going with VW TDI engine but would need info on how to use the ECU for this application.
Ideally a direct plug-in from Toyota would be outstanding.
What also comes to mind is "Are the Transmissions of a 22R motor geared properly for the diesels?" I've seen instances where the trans has been bolted to a 350 and managed to do a fair job.
