Subject: 1997 Dodge diesel

Message:
The problem is stalling at idle or low speeds.
This was how the problem started it then graduated into hard starting. The only way to start truck now is to prime from underhood.
Have replaced lift pump (no change).
Also have replaced rubber sections of fuel lines(no change).
Any ideas????

When it starts hard have you tried to put the throttle down 3/4 way to see if this helps at all? What color of smoke comes out of exhaust when it actually starts. Check your inlet fuel line make sure there are no cracks in the rubber line.

I had the same deal with my '97 when I bought it. Idle speed, man...got to get it up to 700rpm or so. Look at the engine ID tag on the driver's side timing cover, it gives the spec.

Now you need 370 marine injectors, gov. springs and an HX 40 turbo ;)

Heard anything about a bolt in the timing that comes loose and could blow the engine? Dodge and Cummins are arguing over who's problem it is. So far, no one wants to claims resposiblilty, but it is a defect on 1997's

http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/adjustments/2nd_Gen-Idle.htm That's for the idle speed and it has a diagram.

Lisa: It's called the Killer Dowel Pin(KDP) and covers the 94-early 98 12 valve trucks. Good part is it doesn't blow up the engine it just ruins the timing case. Usually it costs about $2000 just for the replacement case, so it's worth a couple hundred bucks to get it tabbed or jigged(depending on which method is used).

I heard about the KDP from a 1997 Dodge diesel owner.
I just now had this problem taken care of by a diesel mechanic in our area. He said that the KDP was intact and secure. I believe "an ounce of prevention($213.05) is worth a pound of cure",$2000.00 or more. He used the metal tab under the existing bolt method to secure the KDP.

97 Dodge diesel dying problems
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 97 dodge diesel 1 ton 4x4. When I initally start and put it in gear (automatic) and press the excelerator the slightest and let off it goes dead. When I back up and let off excelerator to stop and change gears it dies as well, even if I let it warm up. After normal driving time this does not happen. Any advice will be welcomed.

Most likely the engine is dying from the idle speed being too low. The idle rpm is printed on the sticker on the driver's side of the timing gear case. Usually it's 800 ish with the AC on and in gear if it's an auto.
