Subject: 6.2 liter chevy diesel
Message: Trying to resurrect an 83' diesel van. Had either a blown headgasket or timing cover gasket because we found water on the dipstick. Parked for about two years. Recently had heads inspected, installed new head gaskets, timing gears and chain, new water pump, new fuel pump and both fuel filters, drained and replaced oil and filter. Also, replaced 4/8 glow plugs. When I try to crank it, it spins pretty good initially but slows to the point where it will not spin anymore. Acts like it is building compression and can't exhaust?By the way, I also bled the fuel line of air and the injectors feed lines. Any input would be most appreciated. I am normally pretty good with cars but this diesel and the fact that it has set for a while with a water/oil mix inside doesn't help much.

Message: hey JD,
Battery and starter are fine. I do not get any smoke from tailpipe when I'm trying to start engine. The injection pump is properly aligned with the alignment mark on the backside of the timing cover plate. Confused about the question of firing order, no spark plugs.Assumed you were talking about he injection pump firing order being properly timed. Followed Chiltons repair manual when I replaced timing gears and chain. The injection pump drive gear mounts on the front of the camshaft gear and threads with driving gear on the front of the injection pump. All timing marks cam with crank, and the injection pump drive gear with the cam drive gear (injection drive gear mounted on top of cam gear)were aligned. Hope I didn't confuse you about the gears, kind of strange setup but makes sense when you see it. I am sure you know what I am talking about.I am thinking that the push rod lifters are seized up in the engine from the previous water problem in the oil. What do you think? I forgot to check them when I had the heads off. The headgaskets are new on the engine. If I go back in there, will I have to buy two new ones? Do you have a rough estimate on a set (16) of lifters will run? Any other suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you for your response.

Message: Kris, the problem may be the valves not opening, easiest way to check is to crank the engine over with the valve covers off and observe the rocker arms and make sure they move. as for the firing order, a diesel has a firing order just like a gas engine. the injection pump fires all 8 cylinders consecutive to the firing order. if there are 2 or more of the 8 injection lines crossed, those cylinders will recieve fuel on the wrong stroke and cause trouble. BUT the first place I would go is the electrical system because of no smoke at the exhaust. if the exhaust valves werent opening and the engine was burning fuel there would be smoke at the intake. check the starter, batteries and battery cables real close because thats probably the problem. fix the electrical system and make sure there is fuel getting to the injection nozzles and she should fire right up. happy wrenchin

Message: I agree about the electrical. Just because it's turning over does not necessarily mean it's turning over fast enough to fire. These babies have huge starters that are very prone to being cranced too long and then getting fried. I have learned this the hard way. I made the ever fatal mistake of running out of fuel and in the process of trying to get it started again, I fired the started. And I NEVER crank longer than 10 second. Usually only about 6 seconds. Anyhow, it would turn over and my brother-in-law was sure the starter wasn't the problem, but I took the starter off anyhow and had it tested and it would spin, but the load would bury the needle! So charge the batteries to 100%, clean and replace terminals as necessary and if it still won't start, pull the starter and have it tested. I SERIOUSY doubt there is anything wrong with your valve train. When you bled the injectors, you had help turning it over and closing it when it began to weep? All 8? Also, The timing line that is stamped on your timing cover was set for the original injector pump. It is not a true indicator of timing. Also, I just recently performed a similar operation on one of my trucks (replaced timing chain.) When I put it back together, I of course alighned all the timing marks on everything, but the timing none the less was VERY, VERY retarded. So much so that I had to open it all up again and move injector pump timing gear ahead tooth by tooth until it was in time. I have never seen this before...

Message: I got a 6.2l in a '90 G-Van and a problem just started yesterday that's got me confused and concerned. To get it started I've gota crank on it for an unusal amount of time. This is on a cold start, 6 to 8 hrs standing--this is summer. The glow plug light and water-in-fuel light sequence normally. After its running, there's no problem shuttin it down and restarting it, like a short stop at the 7-11, or grocery store, etc. Could it be a fuel pump? I hope its not the injector pump? By the way, this things got 152,000 mls on it, and I've periodically use howes fuel treatment--like every 2nd or 3rd fill-up, and I buy my fuel at truck stops, or gas stations with diesel that I know alot of big trucks use.

Message: Jeff, it is 75% most likely your glow plugs. You should check your batteries and if they are old, replace them with HIGH amp batteries, it will help a lot. Make sure your terminals are
good and clean and making great contact. Your starter should make a really high pitched sound when turning over. Kinda like an old Chrysler or Dodge. If not, and you have checked your batteries and done the maintenance, then pull you started and have it checked. that covers 20%. 5% could be a leakin in you fuel system, but chances are you would see other sings such as smoke when running and no such great performance. Back to the glow plugs. I can just about gurantee that it will not start at all in the fall. glow plugs are REALLY easy to replace except for the one under the A/C compressor, and that really is very easy to get to if you pull the compressor. Be careful though, chances are that the tips could be swollen if they have been not functioning for awhile in which case, they are not at all easy to replace. I have heard that people will pull out the injector and take a pair of bent tip needle nose pliers and break off the end. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT DROP THE END THOUGH, YOU WILL HAVE TO PULL THE HEAD TO GET IT OUT!!!!!!! Since your glow plug light is coming on, that indicates that the glow plug relay and controller are ok. Hope this help. Good luck. Oh, and even with your glow plugs working, it will be a very good idea to plug in your block heater when you park it for the day. That way you will get a better start as it gets colder. And right now, it just might be enough to get it started right away.

Message: It's a long way from you, but there's a place called Clappison's Corners at Hwy 403 and 6 in Hamilton Ontario Canada. Will try to get the phone# and post it. I have not done biz with them (yet) and am not affiliated (sp?) with them in any way, so I don't know how they do biz - good or bad, but they've got loads of 10 year old surplus postal trucks there from one to three thousand (Canadian) dollars - about 40% less than US with most in the middle. They've got 30 6.2's there on any given day. From what I see on this post, they go for way less here. Southern Ontario salts the roads heavily - vehicles rot out long before they stop running here, so in general our scrap yards are also a bonanza for good motors, and they go at about $400.

If you are having a hard starting problem with a 6.2, and you have a mechanical lift pump, replace it. It is cheap, and is very often the problem. I replaced mine with a $40 autozone electric pump, and it solved a couple of my problems.
Also, if you suspect your glow plugs, let them cycle on and off several times BEFORE cranking. Did it start any easier...even a little? Then replace them.
If you are going to replace your glow plugs, do yourself a favor, and make a special removing tool out of nut that is the same metric size and pitch. I can email the simple instructions. Do not break the tips unless you are really sure you won't drop it in there.

With the old 6.2 glow plug issue, there are 3 things you can do.....
1) replace the controller with the same (NOT recommended) they were not made very well to begin with.
2) replace the controller with the newer version controller. I believe the newer controller is the one for the 1988 and up, but I am not sure. This one is mounted on the sidewall, as opposed to the back of the engine like the crappy one.
3) bypass the controller entirely by routing the wire up front to a push button type switch, and just push the button for 10 seconds or so, and start it up. The problem with this, is that you will probably be the only person who will know how to start your rig. A nice little security device, but it could also bite you if you need someone to pick up your rig, or for some reason, need to use it without you actually being there to show them how to start it.
I used to belong to the diesel page, and that is where I picked up most of this stuff. I probably have the instructions somewhere on my computer on how to install the newer controller on our older 6.2's, so if you are interested, contact me.

Same hard start problem with a twist. My 6.2 powered dually was hard to startwhen I got it.Thought newer heads would solve the problem.Still cranks and cranks and slowly take off w/lots of white smoke, lots! Kinda like a gas engine thats out of time.I installed an electric pump, and a pressure gage from the top of the filter housing on the manifold. It produces about 5lbs. before it stops, then pumps as needed. Is there some sort of advance, in the injector pump, other than one controlled by the head temp.? I really like this old truck but I need starting reliability. Sound great with 4" dual exhaust. On a related note, I surer could use the instruction for mounting and installing the "newer controller" as I have the "push button" glow plugs.

Yeah, I probably should not have mentioned the diesel page. I was a member there for two years...back when the forum was free, and not just for paying members only. I did learn alot in the forum section, but the main thing I noticed there, the other "members" were very vocal with the help, more so than here. Not sure why. This forum is free, so you would think that there would be more help here, but that has not been my experience so far.
I have not been a member for about a year now. The reason I stopped....the articles you were paying for tended to focus too much on Duramax, and I did not appreciate the tacky ads that they allowed there.
If the forum was free, I would recommend it...but you are right...not worth paying for.

Which year and application engines would be good to start with. I don't need the power or complexity of a turbo. Would prefer mechanical injectors over electronic. Saltwater is hard on electronics. I will use freshwater cooling for engine and manifolds. Any info would be appreciated. I am not very familiar with these engines. All I know is they would be easy to mount in place of 350 gas engine. This goes out to everyone and anyone who is having glow plug troubles, and somewhat mechanically minded. I've played around with the glow plug controllers a lot, and found a lot of them to be faulty (used ones). Two ways you can override them temporarily to "test" the glow plugs. The first is to cross out the two big terminals on the controller with a screwdriver or something. The other way is to take a set of booster cables (after disconnecting the controller plug (the 4 wires) and just run the positive cable from your battey to the gray glowplug wire. For either of these, stick to less than 10 seconds at a time.
The permanent solution to this is a relay run from a pushbutton switch. Its a very easy system then
goodluck

The glow plug controllers are very sensitive to heat, especially from the engine it's bolted to. Just like the PMD sometimes relocation is necessary. THe heat tricks the controller into think the engine is very hot, so it does not cycle, causing a hard start when the engine is warm.
The jumps and pushbuttons will work, but be careful not to run them longer tha 10 seconds and don't let anyone uneducated drive your truck, even with a functioning glow plug system gas drivers just jump in and turn the key until it starts.

I should be kinda more specific on the relay setup. You run a full sized solenoid, capable of handling a couple hundred amps at least (not the nice little 5 pin bosch ones, which work well for brightening headlights and stereos and such). You want one of the ones that grounds to the body, and a single power wire turns it on. then you just connect your battery wire(red) to one side, and the glow plug wire (grey) to the other. But ya, as diesel luvr said, with this system its possible to melt glow plugs (i.e. holding the pushbutton on for 30 seconds would do it) Myself I count to 8, turn it over for a few seconds, if it still doesn't start, count to 4, turn over again, and if it still doesn't start another 4. Never had any more than that (16 seconds over the course of a minute) -- even on -30 degree weather, and the engine compartment filled with snow. E-mail me if you have any questions

It is underpowered and puts out a little blue smoke, although it does not burn oil or coolant. Any ideas to reduce the smoking and boost the performance without a turbo retrofit? I thought about a K&N type of filter that would let the engine breathe better. (I was told the non-turbo 6.2 will generally outlast a 6.5 turbo.) The "hydraulic" cooling fan really wakes me up when it kicks in. Is this pretty normal ?
Any military Humvee folks out there?

I talked to a guy at work and he said to look at the regulator, his thought is that it is always trying to put a hard charge on the batteries when it doesn't really need to. Also, I have had to replace glow plugs recently, could over charging have anything to do with this?

IS AFTER 45 MPH THE TORK CONVERTER WILL NOT UNLOCK WHEN I PUT THE PEDEL TO THE FLOOR I HAVE ALL READY AJUSTED THE DT CABLE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. BY THE WAY THE TRANSMISSOIN IS A 700R4.
