Subject: 7.3 diesel wont start hot

Message:
i have an 83 7.3 diesel engine, they run great, once you get it started that is. i have replaced starters, glow plugs, solonoids and batteries. once it is hot it does not like to start again. some days it starts great all day long, then one day it dont want to start at all. my fuel filter is only full when running, oil is changed regularly, both my old 7.3 diesels do this. if you try to jump it ,it takes forever, but if you bump start it,it only has to move a foot and it will start right up. any suggestions would be great, really getting discouraged. thank you

I have a 1990 Ford F350 7.3 diesel that has a
problem with hard starting after a quick initial
start up. When I park in on an incline it really
has a hard time starting, but its not as bad
when I park on a decline position. I figure its
an air intrusion problem but I dont where to
begin.

The wait to start light flashes .. doesnt stay on and then the relay starts clicking....... i guess it doesnt give the glow plugs a chance to warm up . Does anyone know of anything else that could be the problem?

slowly pour cold water over the rear part of the injection pump (about 3 litres) for a minute. If it starts then, your injection pump needs replacing ($600 rebuilt)+ labour

hard start hot, check fuel solonoid, it may be starting to fail and the heat makes it harder to pull in (on). Turn on ign, tap inj. pump with screwdirver handle and it may start.

My 7.3 diesel wont start hot!!!

Message:
We just bought a 94 Ford w/7.3 L Diesel (no Turbo) this evening. Fired up fine on the dealer's lot. After it came home, got the sick kid syndrome and would not start. Tried not to run batteries down, acted like it was getting no fuel. Truck is parked downhill and have buyer's remorse out the wazoo! What needs to be done to get this thing started?

Looked at the thread "7.3 diesel wont start hot". I have the cold start problem. Just changed glow plugs and relay and new batteries. Just bought it, it's a '90 F250 PU, no manual, library trips.

Mike mentioned turning the injector pump with a 3/4" wrench. Turn what? New to diesels BTW! Can the timing be easily done? If this should be off list, please let me know at "pmartin1438@wavecable.com", I'll be happy to summerize.

I read a response on the Internet about a hard starting problem I had with my 7.3l diesel ford, unfortunately I can not find the web page again but it worked great. The mechanic explained the low sulpher content in the fuel today causes the injector pump to stick. You can test it buy turning the key on and removing the pink wire going to the injector pump. It should click on and off as you touch it. If it does not it is stuck. You can usually tap it and free it up for the moment. The real cure is to add a small can of 2 stroke oil to the fuel tank to help lubricate the Injector pump. I also use a fuel conditioner. This solved my problem. I just wish I could find the web page so I can thank the guy. He also suggested adding a small amount of transmissin oil to clean out injectors that cause rough idle and stalling engines. Anyway, hope this helps and if anyone knows the web page I was looking for please postit. The guy was right on the money.

My 96 Ford 7.3 power stroke starts fine when cold but once it warms up it will not start it just cranks. If I use starting fluid it will start and stay running. I was told of some oil presure switch under the fuel filter that connects with the injector pump so that if it has low oil presure it wont start and that it may have gone bad. Is there any truth to this.
