Subject: cummins won't start
Message: My '93 Dodge w/Cummins started fine for years, then, overnight, won't start (its 95 degrees out, so not a cold weather thing). Turns over fine but won't fire. Plugged in the engine heater thinking that if it started I had a glow plug problem. Still would not start.
Can you advise on the possible problems and how I might diagnose them? Are there fuses, relays, other that I should start with. Also wondering if perhaps it is a fuel pump issue. Ideas?

Did you fill the fuel filter up with diesel? If not break the lines loose on the injectors until you get fuel coming out with no air bubbles in it and it should crank right up

Must be the season. I just changed my fuel filter on my 98 dodge, filled it up with diesel and it started then died in about 3-5 seconds. I have been cranking the motor for a second to get the fuel pump to pump. Have been doing this for 20 or so tries. How long should it take to get the air out of the lines simplymike@cox.net

Message: To: Cumminspro,
Thanks so much for the reply. After further tinkering, I realized I wasn't getting any fuel, so I pressurized the tank and got fuel to the lifter pump, then the battery died. It's on a charger now and hopefully I can get the rest of the air out tomorrow.
Thanks again for your help.

Message: When you break the lines loose at the injectors you need to crank the engine until fuel squirts out, it will not work if you dont crank the engine. Be careful about cranking an engine that has run out of fuel. If cranked too long, severe damage to the injection pump will occur. Diesel fuel is the only thing that lubricates the close tolerance internal parts. For the first letter, I would guess an electrical problem is causing your truck not to start. I would start by checking the fuses, then check for power to the fuel shutoff solenoid @ the injection pump.

I stopped at the store and my 2001 cummins diesel would not start. Turned over fine, but would not start. I changed the filter in the parking lot and it cranked right up. Drove it home parked it and a couple of hours later it would not start. After turning the engine over and over with the starter, it starts up. Killed the motor and she wouldn't start.
Do you think there could still be air in the lines after driving home 20 miles from the store?

I keep reading about these lift pumps failing and killing the injector pumps. Are these ripoff lift pumps assigned(sold) to the poor owners of these engines the only pumps that'll work? In a world full of diesel fueled vehicles, isn't there a lift pump that'll meet the requirements of the injector pump? The 124K, 18 year old gasoline fuel pump in my '86 Cutlass still holds pressure in spec for a TBI no less. The diaphram lift pump on Ol'92/w 5.9BTA has 136K and works fine.
I'd really like to upgrade but with the dowel pin troubles on the '94 to 2000 engines, 5th gear coming loose on the 5 spd's. and now the 24 valver's junky lift pumps killing the injector pump$$$...I think I'll jes' keep Ol'92.

My God you guys!
Firstly, the bosch ve pump does not like to push air. If you loosen the injector pipe nuts at the injectors and turn the engine over until fuel is squirting out, then it should be a fairly quick start. There will not be a lot of fuel comming out though, so do not worry about that.
If there is still a starting problem after that then you can chase other things, like... the shutoff solenoid. Make sure it clicks (ever so quietly) when the power is on. Or it could be that your center plug is loose and need to be tightened.. in which case you should concided getting a new one put in. Don't worry, they don't cost a fortune and it can be done on engine.
Of course there are some other things which could be wrong as well, but if all you did was change out your filter, then at the very least this is a good place to start.

My old 95 has been running fine for a couple of months. It now has got hard to start. You got to wear the starter out.It will finally start and run like crap for a while. It will finally clear up and run like a charm. If you kill it and let it set for ten minutes--- you got to go through the procedure again.I put mechanical linkage on the cutoff valve because the solenoid had gone bad.The solenoid has two sets of windings. One is large wire for pulling in.The other winding is fine wire for holding in at lower amps. The pull in windings were either bad or I was not getting voltage to them. You could manually pull it in and it would stay.I am just about ready to set this thing on fire. After sitting for ten minutes you have to stand on the starter forever to get it started.HELP

My 99 Dodge 2500 Cummins just died while driving 45-50 mph down a flat stretch of road. Weather was 70 degrees. It has about 1/4 tank of fuel. It's got about 50K miles on it. Has anyone had this happen? I changed the fuel filter thinking it was clogged. Refilled the filter bowl with fuel and purged the air out the brass bolt on the top. It still will not start. There is no indication on the dash lights that indicate anything is wrong. I suspect that there is still air in the system. What I gather is that the shutoff solenoid may have failed. Where is this located? I guess I'll try to purge the air from the injector lines next. Also, how do you "pressurize the tank"? I've read this on this thread...Not sure what that means. Fuel tank?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I bought a '01 24 valve anyway after doing some checking.
The first thing I bought was a fuel pressure guage to check the lift pump pressure before I bought the truck and it was in spec...jes' barely.
It showed 10 psi @ idle and 7psi full chat.
You have to watch the lift pump fuel pressure on a '98.5 to '02 24 valve & you can't watch it without a guage because as previously mentioned , the injector pump needs wet fuel to lubricate and cool the inards..simple as that. Without fuel it'll wear out and heat up the electrical inards too.

I have seen it and have done several! I would like to make a suggestion for a better lift pump. I like the FASS systems by Diesel Performance Products. They are pricey but you get 17 psi pressure at idle and (in my case) with a 400 RWHP truck, i cant get it to drop under 15 PSI!!! Plus you get a little bump in preformance! I would highly suggest it!
Also, if any are in need of a VP44, i can get them a a pretty good price. I would be willing to pass that on to any that need one.
Remember, its not a matter of if! It's when!

Only the '90-'98 Cummins/Dodge have the hand priming lift pumps. The '98.5-'02 have an electric lift pump that aren't easy to prime. I read where some people use air to pressurize the fuel tank with very little pressure to get fuel through the lift pump to prime it. I relocated my lift pump to the frame rail so it'll get the fuel gravity feed when I replaced the original one due to low pressure...10psi idle/7psi full throttle, now is 15psi idle/10psi full throttle.

Because I know so little about the '03's & newer, I can't offer anything about getting your motor started but when you do get it started, you might take up the habit of adding a fuel conditioner with every fueling and don't open the nozzle full open so's not to pull up any water from the underground tanks. good luck
