Subject: Ford 7.3 stalling

Message:
1996 F350, 7.3 diesel auto trans, 78K miles. Stalls out occassionally, dead! Starts right up, no problem. Happens on accelleration, decelleration or idle. Sometimes just hesitates and does not stall. Happens from either fuel tank. Very intermittent - 6 or 8 times in 4 months. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Carl

Sounds similar to mine about a year ago, it was the cam shaft position sensor. The part cost about $180 from Ford. It takes about 10 minutes to replace. Verified by Ford mechanic with diagnostic meter.

Good luck

I just wanted to advise that after 7 yrs. 86.000 miles 5 trips to 2 Ford Dealers They finally fixed it.It stalled since we got it new in 97 I say it had a bad CAM ANGLE SENSOR since it left the Ford Factoy. It stalled dead and would not start and now it runs better then ever so check your CAM ANGLE SENSOR. hope this helps.

Hi, I bought a cam position sensor from International truck dealer- less than $90. Fixed the problem. If you can, always get engine parts from International. Ford gouges you around double for any part. Some parts are unique to Ford (e. g., vacuum booster pump). Get these from a parts dealer if you can. The first time my vacuum boster pump went bad it cost me $250 from a Ford dealer (just the part). Just had to buy another one from Advance for $100.
Good Luck.

The cam position sensor is relatively easy to replace if you have auto repair experience. Finding it is yet another adventure. I just replaced the one on my 2000 F350 7.3 diesel. If you'll lay cross ways under the front end of the truck with your head propped on the inside of the right front tire, you can see it. There's a large pulley in the center part of the engine and
the cam position sensor is under that pulley at about the 8 'o clock position. You'll recognize it because there is a tapered metal tab that sticks out over the side of the pulley base, almost touching the base. Apparently this tab is used for timing purposes. You'll also see an electrical connector with a metal spring clip on one side of the connector that keeps the connector from falling off. Reach up and pull on the top of the metal spring clip and the connector pops off. This makes it easier to get to the bolt that holds the sensor in place. The tab sticking out over the pulley base is part of the one piece bracket that holds the sensor in place. The bolt holding the bracket and sensor on my truck was a 10mm. And it was tight. It had no washer, but had ridges on the bottom of the bolt head that keeps it in place. I couldn't budge it with the wrench alone, so I had someone run a small length of wood from the top of the engine to the end of the wrench. A 3' long 1x2 works. They tapped with a hammer on their end of the stick and the bolt immediately came loose. After that it was easy to remove the bolt and work the sensor out of the hole. A long flat blade screwdriver was helpful in working the sensor out. Once that was done, it was just a matter of minutes to put the new one in. Tightening the bolt is easy because now you're pushing instead of pulling. Plugged in the connector and works just fine, maybe better than before.

Suggestion: Use a good quality box end wrench or socket for loosening the bolt. If you round off the edges, you're gonna be in trouble.

I have a 1995 f-450. For about a year and half it has had a miss in it it would just cut off like you turned the key off and now it has gotten worse, when i start it up in the morning when it is cold it wont hardly run it keeps dying out and then when i try to restart it it starts right up, and also when i coast down a hill it smokes until i give it gas and it still smokes a while and when it catches up with it self it is ok, Ive been told it could be the loom but the more i read here i think it might be the cam sensor any ideas thank you

I own a 1999 Ford F-250 PSD. My problem is every once in a while, say, 4-6 weeks of everyday driving, the truck will "hiccup" at about 40-45 MPH and die. Turn off the key and restart fine, no more problem. Sounds like a common problem with these trucks. I heard about Stanadye Fuel Additive helps. I don't know, any suggestions would help. Thanks.

My 1990 7.3 diesel starts fine, but then it stalls and takes a lot of cranking to start again.
This is not a problem if the truck was only sitting for a bout 4 hrs. but longer than that, it stalls after running fo about 20 seconds. thanks

I recently bought a 2001 Ford F-250 powerstroke.
The person I bought it from was taking it to a local shell to have the oil changed. I do my own oil changes, and don't have any idea what kind of oil was being used. Two questions:1. Will I cause any damage to the engine if I switch to a different oil? If it's ok to switch what do you recommend?

Thank You,

Please Help.

I have a 2000 F-250 that has been starting kind of hard lately.(Out of the ordinary) Starting, stalling, starting, stalling and after enough attempts it finally stays running. Today after setting for two days it wouldn't fire at all. Only every now and then it would pop. Are there any ideas out there? Cam position sensor switch???

Thanks,

Chris

My truck has had the same problem since it was new, (136000+miles now) replaced the cam sensor every year like clock work until this year. On it's fifth sensor now and it has a new glitch. No codes present and it cuts out as if you turned the key off and or dies off kicks back on and continues to run for a few feet or miles then clicks come from under the dash, indicator lights come on in the dash and the truck dies. Still no codes. Truck will start agin but only do it in few seconds or miles. Ready to sell it.Anybody got any ideas? PS I have a 04 super duty and it has had the EGR replaced on the turbo, that was great, loose power, truck starts shaking, semi behind me almost runs over me, let the truck cool down and get 10 more miles and it quits , maybe I will buy a dodge next time.

UNDER FULL ACCELLERATION IT DIES AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE GOES TO COLD ALMOST RIGHT AWAY AT THE SAME TIME..

HE CALLED ME ASKING WHERE THE THERMOSTAT WAS AND I LOOKED IT UP NOT KNOWING MYSELF...IT WAS SAID TO BE IN THE WATER PUMP AND THAT IS WHAT I TOLD HIM..NEXT CALL WAS HE CAN SEE A T-STAT IN THE UPPER GOOSE NECK LIKE CONVENTIONALLY LOCATED ON MANY CARS AND TRUCKS SO HE BREAKS A BOLT OFF IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO REMOVE IT...WHY HE WAS THERE I DON'T KNOW BUT ANYWAY, THE CAM ANGLE SENSOR SPOKEN ABOUT WILL GET A TRY ON THIS ONE AS IT HAS REPORTEDLY NEVER BEEN CHANGED..

ANY HELP IN ADDITION IS WELCOMED..HE HAS A TASK NOW OF REMOVING THAT UPPER GOOSE NECK HE THOUGHT WAS FOR THE T-STAT..ONE MORE THING, HE CLAIMED IT HAS WHAT APPEARED TO BE A SPOT WELD OR A RIVET ON THAT SAME HOUSING AND HE COULD NOT REMOVE IT WITH BOTH BOLTS OUT..I AM MILES AWAY AND CANNOT ASSIST HIM OTHER THAN THE PHONE..

I AM A RETIRED "AUTO" MECHANIC SO I ALWAYS GET THE CALL WHEN TROUBLE COMES TO HIS TOWN..

Just got back from the dealer with my 2000 F250 7.3. Cam position sensor AND exhaust back pressure sensor replaced. Big bucks to replace and diagnois at dealer. Truck has 104,000 and only have had a water pump bearing failure while under warranty. Truck sounds and runs different. What I don't know is which went first? Never had a code or problem until the start / stalling began. Engine sounds alot different than before and seems to have some extra low range power. Anyone with similar situation have input??

When I changed the fuel filter....I was surprised that the fuel oil looked blue and rather thick....Michigan ....cold winters.

Maybe glow plugs? Any help is appreciated. Tx.
