Hi Dave, try contacting a Detroit Diesel Distributor, I know at one time there was a connection between Detroit Diesel and Perkins.
Also you may want to contact Hansen Marine Engineering in Marblehead Ma. (sorry I don't have the phone number). I used to work there on 4-108s.
They were used as auxillary power for sailboats.
They were made into marine engines by a company known as Westerbeke.

Hello Tony Thanks for the reply. I will forward this info to the owner. How long ago did you live in Marblehead or that area. I'm originally from the Boston area(Somerville). My dad purchased his boat at Russo's Marine in Medford, when the father was still running it. Sound familiar? I can get the phone number for Hansen .I used to work at Norwood airport @ Norwood Aviation back in 1980-83. I'm not sure if you can help, but I'm looking for the zinc on my engine..... looks like it may be on top behind the reservoir.... sp... I have a manual but it doesn't refer to the zinc's at all.... which really is strange since I'm sure they are there someplace......

apart. I had to buy another engine for the
block. I need to know torqueing specs. to
rebuild the engine. Can anyone send these to

My guess would be that it is probably an 80 to
100 HP and would be enough power for
anything really. Do you have the specs for
torquing this engine? If you call a dealer and
give them the serial number off the engine
they can tell you the horsepower. Any Massey
Ferguson or anyone who handles Perkins
Deisel engines, or Perkins Deisel Parts
people. Some of the Fords carry Perkins
engines, etc. My Clark Fork lift has a 4 cyl,
Perkins Deisel engine for example

get a Chevrolet alternator with the box built in.
tie together both wires to the battery that is all
there is to it. I have also seen them with one
wire jumped over to the other. That is the
same thing as tying them together. You have a
plug that plugs onto the alternator. That wire
needs to be tied in with the hot wire. Then it
should show charging.
I need the torqueing information for head bolts
etc. You wouldn't happen to have that would
you?

I emailed them and they have the manual I
need, I have been so busy working on the log
house I haven't had time to work on the tractor
besides the house is now in the dry and with
our monsoon :) tractor work is not a priority if
you understand--but Hansen Marine does
have the manual. You can email them the
model and serial numbers and they will tell
you how much it is and send it to you. Good

I suggest you call around your area to places
that fix or sell tractors, fork lifts, and also call
junk yards for cars and trucks. You might find
a tractor or fork lift, or truck with the head you
need. That is how I found the engine for my
Massey Ferguson, tractor, the tractor was in
terrible shape but the engine was good. The
engine on my tractor had been taken apart by
someone who did not know what he was
doing, was in pieces, some had been lost and
the block was cracked. ie the engine had been
ruined., but the frame etc. was in excellent
shape. I have not had time to work on it.--see
my note above--Hope this helps you.

I had asmooth velvet 72 rebuilt and proceded to installed into my perkins4-108
when I put the engine in fwd the transmission works great
when i put it in reversed - I hear a grinding noise like "tac-tac-tac"
I have to take the engine out al over again - but before I lug the 200lb transmission back to the repair shop - I wnated some advice whethere the flywheel in the engine might be the culprit?

I have a Perkins 4/99 manual which is essentially the same as a 4/108. I dont want to part with it but I am quite happy to pass on any information you may require. I used many 4/99 and 108 engines in the past as conversions in cars and had a shed full of spares, sadly, I disposed of them some years ago.

I recently ran my Perkins 4-108,with no oil in the transmission!! Huh!, things got hot,kinda smokey hot for a while,till i shut down the engine and poured in the only oil i had onboard-10/40 motor oil.I then fired the engine back up,and we motored out of the congested shipping channel.Everything seems to be running fine still.Question,What might go wrong as a result of this,and what type of trannie fluid do i use?

Can anyone tell me how to connect a calorifier to a 4.108? Does it go on the "sweet water" system or the "raw water"? And where do I cut in to the existing piping?

I've got a 4-108 in my 41 foot sailboat that i purchased in
October. Just started it but cannot figure out if it has glow
plugs, compression release or any sort of starting aid.
Have to crank it a long time to start but once its warm it
starts right up. I have a manual and can find nothing about
glow plugs or compression release. I've owned lots of
different diesels and they all had glow plugs except for a
11hp yanmar which had compression release. I cannot find
glow plugs on the engine but it is installed in such a way
that its hard to see what is buried under the exhaust
manifold. Thanks for any help you can give me. FD
