check the fuel filter housing before cold start.
is it full? If not , fuel check valve is leaking
fuel back to tank, or check to see if power drops
from pcm or injecter driver module while cranking,
bad ign. switch?

I had the same problem with my 96 ford and replaced the same parts. What happens with those motors is that the fuel injector(wiring harnes) gets a open conection to one or two of the injectors and take a while to start. The wiring harness connects the injectors to the rest of the harness threw the valve cover. It is a part of the valve cover gastet and that is were there the open wires are.

I have a 94 F-250 with a 7.3 turbo diesel and it ran fine until one morning a couple weeks ago, when I started it, it seemed to have a miss . Just like it is running on 7 cylinders if it was a gas engine. Could it be the turbo or is it most likely an injector. It seems better at high RPM.Any suggestions would be awesome

7.3 turbo diesel looses power under load cold only
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,I have a 96 F350 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel with 102K and lately (within the last week) have noticed a problem with the power when the engine is not at max running temperature. In the morning she starts easy and idles fine. Under no load I notice no problem. When accelerating on a flat I can ease my accelerator to build up speed to 65 mph or faster, when accelerating to climb a hill my truck starts to buck, skip, and what seems to be a misfire. If I keep my foot into it the engine repair light comes on. Take my foot out of it and the engine will act normally the service engine light goes out and I can under a no-load or accelerating rate of speed climb any hill but my speed will decrease the longer and steeper the hill. I thought it might have something to do with the fuel but I just installed a new air filter and fuel filter within the last month. I filled my tanks 6 times since then with fuel. I try to never go below a ¼ tank on either tank. Would anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this problem? Your help and impute will be most appreciated. Also, if you have this problem can your respond to this notice with the different procedures and treatments you have used trying to correct the problem having no results. I am a layman when it comes to diesel mechanics. I understand the terminology but have never been hands on with a diesel. Please try to explain your comments in a layman’s manner.

Thank You,
David

We had a similar situation where our 95 F350 would miss and lose power going up an incline. There is an additional prefilter on some fords ('95 for example) that is attached to the right of the fuel filter. On our outfit the prefilter wire screen was really clogged. We had replaced the fuel filter but had not cleaned out this other filter. Runs like a champ now!

I have a 97 250 that has problems starting. I feel the problem is in the electrical system. When I turn on the key, the volt meter shows about 11 volts, then drops to about 9 when the glow plugs kick in. The engine cranks but doesn't want to start. I've taken it to a shop, they said replace the batteries. it still has the problem with two new batteries. I've also replaced the alternater and starter. Could it be the relay/cccontrol mod. for the glow plugs?

I have an '01 7.3 and usually on cold starts it "gallops"....or idles like a harley for a few seconds and then idles normally...It has happened when the weather is warm..but typically it is only when cold. It happens severely and will shut down when extrememly cold...It is in the shop right now for a bad fuel pump, and I asked them to run a diagnosis on it...however the paper work in the glove box says that the problem has been there for a while and they didn't know what the problem was (or didn't want to fix it). Anything would be helpful.
Thank you,

I have a 97 ford powerstroke diesel. It just starts to loose power when under load like a trailer. Ex. On interstate traveling 70 mph.the truck will just start to slow down to about 45. Put foot on clutch and motor reves to max rpm. Ingage clutch and still no power. Does this for a few minutes and then just as suddenly begins to accelorate again back to 70. Did about 7 times in 25o miles. Gradually getting worse . Now when going 55 it will drop down to 25 for a mile or two and then justs starts running back to normal. Someone told me to watch for black or white smoke from exhaust. Did neither shows up. No diesel smell either. New fuel filter and air filter. What do I check next. No problem when truck is not loaded or towing trailer.
Please help if possible.

I have a 94 that when cold (below 40 degrees or so) has a lot of white smoke when the engine is cold until it warms up. In the summer, no smoke at all and gradually gets worse until it is real cold in the winter when it is at its worse.

This has done this since new, Ford never could tell me what was wrong and over the years it has gotten worse.

Is it a glow plug issue?

Oh yea, if I run the block heater when cold, there is no smoke either, even on the coldest of days.

The motor has about 110,000 miles with new heads.

Thanks

My 1996 truck has 257000 miles on it and runs like new except when it is very cold outside. The glow plugs are fine and the fuel filter is fine. When I accelerate it runs okay, but upon coasting or lifting off of the accelerater, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner with the hose clogged up and white smoke appears out the exhaust. This will continue even after the truck has warmed up. Is there a valve on the turbo that is not functioning in cold weather.

It has trouble codes P1261 ( injector circuit # 1
high to low short) P1263 (# 3 same thing) P1265
(# 5 same thing) P1267 ( # 7 same thing).
We removed the right valve cover to inspect the wiring to the injectors and glow plugs , all looks good. We also checked IDM fuses (good).
any ideas would be of a great help.

Dixie,
There is an oil presure sensor on the top-front of the engine. Disconnect the wire and take out the sensor. Use a flashlight and check to make sure the resevoir is full of engine oil. If it is not full it won't run. I had my 96 towed into ford 4 times and they never figured it out. Now I just check it everytime I change the oil.

F 250 diesel low mpg

Message:
Our Ford 2001 F250 diesel 7.3l has been a great truck. When we first got it new it got about 16-18 mpg in town. We took it on vacation and pulled a 26' travel trailer to South Dakota and for some reason the truck only got 6-8 mpg. That is very disappointing. Could it be that the truck might have a non-thermal clutch that is not shutting off when it is not hot and using more fuel? I don't even know if it has a clutch or not. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a 1995 f350 with the 7.3 turbo deisel. I am getting the code for low voltage to the #1 injector. This truck is new to me so I don't know much about it. I have been told that the #1 injector is on the drivers side so I took the valve cover off and checked the wires going to the injector and even switched the pigtails harnesses inside the valve covers to see if the problem would shift to a differnt injector. It didn't. I have ohm'ed the plug on the other end of the valve cover back to the PCM and find that all Ohm out to be 6 ohms which I believe is good. So I'm thinking that the wiring to all the injectors is good including #1. So is the injector its self my problem or is the pcm most likely my problem. I don't have spares and can't afford to just be replacing parts. Is there something else I should be looking at. The truck is running like it has a dead mis. Thanks for any help anyone has for a new guy to deisels
