Hey bud,
I have the same (if by same I assume that you have the
6.5 turbo but with Mechanical Fuel Injection pump
instead of electronic.
I felt the same way about my truck. Here's what I have
done...
Engine
• 6.5l turbo diesel
• Mechanical Fuel Injection
• New 1999? Longblock/crate motor, Stock GM 6.5
Turbo specs. (Purchased February 2004. Original
Longblock replaced @ 248,000 miles)
Fuel system
• Stock Mechanical Fuel Injection Pump Re-Calibrated
• High flow, high pop Bosch injectors
• Silicon - Injector return lines
• New fuel filters
Air Flow/Exhaust
• K&N air filter (For stock air box)
• Banks - Stock Air box modifications
• GM-8 Turbo Upgrade (up from original GM-3 Turbo
which blew it's seal)
•3.5" performance exhaust with 4"
DynaMax muffler/tailpipe and 5" Chrome exhaust tip
Cooling
• 1997 High capacity cooling system
• Refurbish Stock Radiator (at time of engine swap)
• Flex-a-lite dual fans (Modification to come)
• Shell - Rotella -ELC - Coolant/Antifreeze
• Temp gauge went from average of 160-165 degrees to
140
Oil/Filtration
• Shell - Rotella -15w40 HD synthetic Diesel and Marine
engine oil
• Large Capacity Oil Filter (usually Fram is used)
• Miloden Hi-Flow Oil Pump, Stock Oil pan with drain
plug
Engine "Bling-Bling"
• Red Painted - Valve Covers
• Cleaned/Polished intake manifold and upper plenum
pipe
• Most everything cleaned, detailed, painted (black) at
time of rebuild
I noticed a huge increase in pulling and cruising powder
<grin>
Hope this helps.
Respectfully,
David M.

Hey I just re-read my post...
That would be a huge increase in Horse POWER not
powder! Damn spell checker. <grin>
WOW! Dual 4 inch straight pipes?!?!? How loud is that?
BTW My exhaust is Banks (Not previously specified).
Also, I have heard more bad than good regarding the
Gear drive timing set. Just going with a heavy duty
chain drive with the new long block, is the safest bet,
IMHO.
Respecfully,
David M.

thanks for the info on the gear driven timeing i was checkin gin to that also ( you saved me some future head aches )
As far a loudness on mine with the straight pipes it is actually quiter than the new cummins and power stokes with there muffers on .... go figure i thought it woudl be loud to but ...now when you take off at a light you do have a NICE low rumble sound nothing to sever though -- mine is a 5 sp manual give it a try . now if you shorten the pipe (s) until before the rear wheels IT IS LOUD so make sure you run them all the way to the back of truck .. if you do this
