RE: n14 cummings

Message:
Bill,

I had three N14's, the first was in a 91 Pete, 410 HP, the second in a 93 Pete, 430 HP. These two were both STC (mechanical injection) engines. The third one was in a 97 Pete, 500 HP, electronic. Of the three, I liked the electronic the best - it started better in cold weather and got better mileage than the other two, a little over 7.1 MPG vs. 6.3 and 6.6 for the STC engines. The electronic engine was a bit noisier at idle, but once you were going down the road, there was little difference in the noise level.

You should be able to convert to STC, but I don't think the cost would be justified, especially when you consider the increased fuel consumption. As for the actual dollar figure, I have no idea, but it isn't a bill I would want to face. Your local Cummins dealer would be able to tell you a lot more as there may be regulations in effect that prevent you from converting it if it is still going to be used on-highway. If you're planning to max out the fuel delivery, or put a stinger in the pump, you can count on much reduced engine and component life.

Just my two cents worth.

I have a electronic n14 turned up to 460 hp, but we were told it was missing some kind of air sensor that restricks hp by 25% if not installed. The truck runs out of power climbing small hills, is there a different turbo or? to make it up the hills.

RE: N14 Cummins

Message:
Mark,

It's probably the Intake Air Temperature sensor (IAT) that is missing. The computer will change the timing and fueling rate based on the temperature of the air coming into the engine. Because the computer cannot get a true air temperature when the sensor fails or is missing, it simply defuels the engine to ensure that no damage is done by over-fueling when temperatures are not at proper levels.

Another sensor that can cause problems when missing is the Manifold Pressure sensor. During periods of low boost, the fuel rate is cut back because there is less oxygen available for combustion. If this sensor is missing or faulty, the computer keeps the fuel rate low so that smoke and excessive emissions are not produced, not to mention to keep the exhaust temperatures down to a safe level so that things don't start to melt.

As for the cost of converting to STC, it would be high. You would need different injectors, and a different fuel pump. There is also a timing controller that would need to be installed. What the cost would be to convert, I don't know, but it would be far cheaper and much more efficient to install the missing sensor.

I am a little curious as to why a sensor is MISSING. I can understand a sensor malfunctioning, but the fact that it is not there at all makes me wonder a bit. At present you're probably only making 325 - 350 HP, but the bad part is that your fuel mileage is probably in the toilet right now too. With today's fuel costs, keeping your fuel cost down is going to be the key to success. Electronic engines are able to get the most out of a given amount of fuel. Efficiency translates into reduced cost, which translates into greater profit.

One other thing to consider: Fuel system problem diagnosis. Electronic engine fuel problems can be diagnosed faster, easier, cheaper and more accurately than for mechanical injection systems. With the electronic engines, it only takes minutes to get a readout of any problems, and the cost would be around $40 or so. Mechanical engines need to have temporary fuel flow sensors installed, and the truck has to be operated under a load. The only way have it hooked up to the necessary monitoring equipment and operate under load is to do a dyno run, which costs about $200 these days if I've been hearing correctly.

To make a long story short, replace the missing sensor. It'll be the best for your engine.

Good luck!

I have a 500 hp N14 with 810,00 miles and it has developed a ticking nose that comes and goes. I had the overhead set the injectors flushed and the Cummings Repair shop said everything was within specs. You can rev the engine to 1500 rpm and not hear the noise or at idle. The engine runs perfect has good power and uses no oil. The noise is most noticable when under a heavy load and starting to accelerate. It only does it for a few seconds most of the time, somestimes a little louder than others, but always goes away. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. thanks

ive checked for loose fuel lines , air leaks in the air to air .
i'am still searching for broken wires .

there's also a 20 amp fuse hooked into the harness but no one seems to figure out why it there.

but if you replace the fuse it runs great , until the fuse blows

n14 cummings oil pressure problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a problem with the engine oil pressure the pump has been check and there is nothing wrong with it. The problem is the oil pressure won't stay constant to a 12pressure it drops to a seven and stays there. The truck turns on but the oil seems to fail everytime. They check the heads of the motor and there fine. The computer reads that there is no problem. It's this simple the oil pressure will not rise to what it has to for the truck to function at normal perameters. If any one call tell me what the problem is e-mail me as soon as possible. My mechanic is trying to cheat me so i want to be one step ahead of him. If anyone has had the same problem or knows someone that did please contact me at the e-mail address your input will be thanked.

The blinking light is telling you a fault code for the engine...read the flashes....flashes...space....flashes...maybe 2 or more codes....some engines u need to hold the cruise control switch on "resume" to read the codes. Talk to a knowledgable dealer on your particular truck, he can decipher the codes.

Let's see, where do I start?

Darrain and Bill: Sorry, I don't have those specs available, but would provide them if I had them. I recommend you check with Cummins. They will either sell you a shop manual, or might even photocopy a page from the manual for you.

Alex: I had an N14 450e - it typically ran boost right in that range. You should be ok.

Dennis: At what temperatures are you having the hard starting problem? Is that a Big Cam III 400? If I remember correctly, that was a lower compression engine. I had a late 70's IH with the old NTH 400 in it, which was also a low compression engine. If you walked past it with an ice cream cone in the summer time you needed a can of ether to get it started. The Big Cam III and Big Cam IV engines were hard starting in cool temperatures, 40 degrees and below, but they would usually start without ether. If it got below 20 degrees it was a different story though.

Carr: Your best bet for Cummins manuals would be through a Cummins dealer.

Terry: That can happen, although it is the exception and not the rule. The rule to follow is this: When you remove an oil filter from an engine, no matter what filter it is, ALWAYS check to make sure that all of the gaskets have been removed from the filter housing before installing the new filter. Obviously, you have learned that lesson the hard way. Sorry to hear about your streak of bad luck.

After removing and replacing 5 and 6 injectors there dos not seem to be much to these injectors... There must be a way to rebuild them myself...
