Subject: proper 6.2 diesel vacuum pump removal?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I thought I'd post my current issue here... I have an '86 Chevy K-10 Suburban with a 6.2L diesel in it.

I'm trying to replace the vacuum pump so I have my cruise control and a/c back. I've take off the bolt and clip holding the old pump down and it turns freely now in a half circle, however I can't get it up and out of the engine at all. I've yanked on it quite a bit and worked it around to try to loosen whatever is holding it down but don't know why it won't come out. Is there something else holding it down or some special technique to remove the old pump? Or do I just keep yanking on it and working it around to loosen it? Maybe the oil drive shaft is stuck on both sides? My manual isn't very helpful about the removal and install... no detail at all.

Also, I guess I might as well post about my wheel noise on the chance anyone might help me narrow that down. If anyone is familiar with the GM 4x4 I'd appreciate some advice.

The driver's side wheel (as far as I can tell when I'm moving) seems to be making a ratcheting/clicking noise from 5-10mph to around 35-40mph. There's also a thump just when coming to a full stop. This thumping behavior is similar to what happens when I haven't fully disengaged 4 WD. The noises stop when I shift into 4 WD.

I'm thinking that it's something (?) in the driver's side hub that's causing the problem - maybe a weak spring or broken clip that's letting it almost slip into 4 WD. A buddy said it also might be the differential fluid... low level or the gear oil needing replacement. I'm thinking that if it was the oil then it wouldn't stop when I shift into 4 wd? Any ideas?

thanks.

Well, I think I can answer my own questions...

The engine was hot when I was taking the vacuum pump off and I figure the aluminum pump body had expanded a bit with the heat. I left it to cool for several hours and then didn't have much trouble getting it out.

I got it all replaced with the head off a pump I bought off ebay, since my shaft was slightly different I kept that and just used the other pump's round vacuum head on my shaft. However I still don't seem to get vacuum... so maybe that pump was bad too... There doesn't seem to be any user servicable parts on those things? I took one apart and looked at it, but didn't see much of anything I could really replace, like check valves or anything. I'm trying to avoid buying a new one at over $100. Anyone have any ideas?

As for the clicking... my chevy dealer said to clean out the automatic locking components and then grease them up real good... and hopefully they'd be good. So I shall try that soon.
