Subject: 6.5L Chevy Diesel Shuts down after 10min

Message:
This 98 chevy 1 ton dully starts good and runs great, but when you have driven for 10 or 15 min and need to go into a store it won't start when you come back out. If you wait 10 min or so it will restart. Recently, it has begun to shut down for no apparent reason while driving. If you get off on the side of the road and wait 10 min or so it starts up but may shut down again in another 5 or ten minutes. Several years ago the dealership replaced the shutoff fuel valve(twice) and it is acting the same way! Is this something that has to be replaced every so many miles? Need any information that might help me keep this thing going. MILES ON TRUCK 91,000. Thanks

This problem is not something you should have to deal with on a reg. basis... I have had several dealer installed injection pumps cause this problem, also the crank shaft position sensor may be an issue. Best advice is to see a diesel injection service, they know how to repair your problem. avoid the dealership parts replacers...

Damn boys this sounds pretty common. Mine does it too. I am getting ready to replace a sensor that is located by the injector pump. I hope that fixes it. They say that the sensor gets hot and will miss read the messages that the injector pump sends out.

I recently had the same sort of problem. I had the injector pump and PMD (the sensor/driver) replaced and that solved the problem. The pump is warentied for 11 yrs. or 193,00kms. Check on that it saved me big $$$. When the PMD is replaced have it rubber mounted to the firwall, that way there is no heat and vibration from the block.

The PMD is what fails and yes it is a common problem and yes located on the side of the injection pump in hot engine valley, and yes it fail from heat, so replacing it there it will fail again.
The only good pmd relocation kit is the PDC (pump driver cooler) only one with a zero failure rate and comes complete with remote hartness, pmd and all for only $490 shipped, see www.duramax.bizhosting.com for more details

I had that problem too. there is a fuel booster pump at the bottom of the frame. that seems to be a typical problem as well as the fuel injection pump. if i get more than 200,000miles out of my inj. pump i am lucky as hell. but the fuel boost pump is the first thing i check when i work on these engines.

you should have bought a DODGE CUMMINS, last cummins I had 391,000 miles no problem. But I also had a 1998 chevy 6.5 diesel and about 94,000 miles it did the same thing as your truck the GM dieler worked on the injector pump and changed the lifter pump it was coverer under warranty. $100 dollar deduct. I think the injector pump is under warranty for seven years or 125,000 miles

The 6.5 is a good engine once you get the PMD and OPS and cooling problems resolved, best way to do that is the PDC, OPS Saver and WMI, respectively.

Hello...I recently purchased a 95 1500 with a 6.5L turbo diesel. I haven't had any of the above problems, but I spoke with a tech at a diesel injection shop and he told me that the 6.5 was a good engine for driving around, but if I do much towing or 4-wheeling, that it would not last. I love the truck and want it to last and prevent any problems. I installed a k & n filter at 88,000 miles and am planning to install a 4-inch exhaust to help cool the exhaust temperature. What exactly is the PDC, OPS, and WMI that I read about? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Eric

pdc = pump driver cooler,
ops saver = oil pressure switch saver,
both for dependablility to stop common parts failure,
the WMI = water mist injection to keep engine cool as tendency to crack cylinder heads.

I heard of a guy that bought one of those "water misters" from A1 and it stuck in the run position and busted a piston when he cranked it.

We are experencing a no start, intermitent problem with the above truck. The no start condition does not last long enough to completely diagnosis the problem. We have followed the Mitchell on demand testing process and have come to the replace injector pump area. The optical sensor checked out according to the diagnosis tree But I am not convinced. Any help?
