This truck was stolen for 7 months, since I have gotten it back we have put alternator, batteries, fuel injection pump, injectors, and power steering pump. It was smoking bad...... so the injection pump and injectors. But now it still won't time. I know I have to look at the timing. But now with the new fuel system you can't get it to start when it is hot for anything on earth. You have to wait for it to cool down ( 3 to 5 hours) , so the glow plugs will come on. With glow plugs on it starts like a dream. It does seem to be running wonderfully other than this problem. Any suggestions ????????????

Someone said something about the temperature sensor, so I looked this up. I see that it has one.... and may need to be replaced. But as I read I took it to mean the sensor runs a fan on my radiator..... which doesn't exist, or was removed by someone else. But I don't see where it could have ever been ???

Before the injection pump and injectors it would start when hot, but just took a little while.... if you bumped it once or twice, then it would start.

Thanks for any suggestions. I really love my truck and am just not ready to give up on it. But getting just a little frustrated, as I work on my own trucks, but don't know much about trouble shooting. You guys have been so great, and right on target so far.

Jana

try hot wiring the glowplug relay to a pushbutton switch. that way you can control the glowplug function manually. this may rule out your problem. if not it may be compression related. if the rings are shot it will not build compression with the hot thinner oil. it is possible that the timing is still off and that is why it wont start

Try unbolting the glow plug controller from it's bracket. I found that heat was migrating up the steel bracket causing the glow plug controller to think that the engine was very hot, which prevents the glow plugs from cycling.

I left it unbolted so that it flops around, but someone anal could make a heat shield or an insulated bracket.

I would avoid wiring the glow plugs to switch, unless as a last resort. If one of those tips breaks off into the cylinder you are screwed.

Jana sorry to hear your truck wa stolen. If it won't start hot it's not the glowplugs. It shouldn't need heat to start hot. If there is not a lot of white smoke when it finally starts and you tried starting it hot before, then there is no fuel being injected. The lift pump or the ignition switch may be bad. If it starts then dies the oil pressure switch may be bad. When mine's lift pump died, it was harder to start but would run with less power and the transmission would shift late unless I released the throttle forcing the shift. It almost sounds to me like one or both your batteries are weak and hot cranking speed is too slow to cause the fire to light up. I periodically start mine cold with one battery disconnected and immediatly shut it off and disconnect that one and disconnect the other and restart it. If one battery is weak you will notice how it starts or doesn't.
