Small Car Engine Transplant

I have always driven small diesel car (VW’s) but find that it is harder and harder to find on in good shape at a reasonable price, also the selection of makes and models is pretty bad. Has anyone hear of putting a diesel engine in the frame of a North American car or small truck. I do not want anything bigger than about 3 L. I know that there are a number of European and Japanese manufactures that make suitable L4 engines. I also know that American companies like Perkins and Cummings make smaller engines but have no idea if it is possible to fit them into a passenger car. Has any Diesel fenatice tried this before and does anyone have any advice.

Thanks for your help.

Michael Crowle

Volkswagen, Mercedes, and London Taxi all import new diesel cars to the US. The selection is very good. The new diesel engines in these cars run circles around the older ones and performance rivals gas engines, except more torque.

You can buy a diesel engine on ebay and drop it into the appropriate car. Most of the same cars you see in the US are available in the rest of the world in diesel. There are no restrictions on importing parts, which is what an engine is considered.

It's just much easier to go out and buy a new Jetta or Passat with a TDI.
