Subject: hard starting cummings

Message:
If my 1996 dodge cummings sets for a day or more it is a bear to start. It is as if it does not have fuel in the system. Once started it runs fine and resarts easily if done with in a day or so, but if left setting for a few days the same hard starting problem.

rob, i am familiar with your problem. i have had several 96,97 model dodges that have given us this same problem.we have pinpointed most of the probs to a def fuel return check valve mounted on the inj. pump body.this is a fluid bolt that is fastening a banjo type line to the pump near the mounting flange on the right side of the pump. any authorised bosch dealer can get you the up dated check valve, or you can take it apart and try cleaning it.
we also found some earlier models with def shut down solenoids.they dont always pull the fuel lever all the way open.(hard cold starts) there is an updated design for this too. dodge dealer could help you or cummins dealer. hope this helps. r.a. guthrie

I would start by breaking the overflow valve loose on the back of the pump and pump the hand primer on the supply pump till fuel starts coming out.
If that doesn't work break all the lines loose at the injectors till you get fuel to come out.Once you get fuel to come out tighten them back up and then all the air should be out and it should crank.

If that doesn't work break all the lines loose on the injectors and spin the motor over till you get fuel to come out. After you get fuel to come out tighten the lines back up and hopefully all the air will be out of the system and it will crank.

Engine Swap

Message:
I bought a 2001 HO Dodge cummings noticed some leaking and had to replce the engine because of a cracked block. I am told the engine I bought was a 2000 HO. When I put it in it cranked and ran rough until the tach went to zero and then it smoothes out and runs fine. Tach on Zero. I did a diagnostic check on it and it showed a bad crankshaft position sensor I replaced it and that did nothing. Everytime I crank it it does the same thing. Runs very rough for 5-10 seconds then the tach once again drops to zero and it runs smooth again. I do not feel as if I am only getting about 75% acceleration. One thing I noticed is that the crank position sensor in the replacement engine is on the drivers side of the block. The original engine did not have one there. Can you give me any guidance???

I have a 1996 dodge 3500 with the Cummins diesel in it. I am having several different problems, (or maybe one problem with 2 different symptoms).

1. Truck won't start most of the time, it seems like it has gotten worse over the last couple of months, once it starts, it runs fine, but if you shut it off, it won't start for quite a while??

2. My idle RPM is only running about 450-500 RPM cold, and only gets to about 600 warm. I just had the throttle cable update done, but it didn't make any difference, and idle RPM has already been reset, but after a week or so, the RPM was back at the same low speed.

I have a 2002 Fleetwood Revolution Motor home. With a 320 cummings ISC diesel. Maybe 2 Months ago I put the MH in storage for 10 days, when returning It took about 30 sec or more of cranking to start. Now this happens off and on. Some times when the engine cold and sometimes when its only been turned off a few min. I called cummings they thought it was loseing the prim. To get it checked at a Auth. Cummins shop. I Had spent the winter in Fl. Never did get that cold. I called South East Cummings of Tampa. They told me that this problem was a Frightlinner problum. With somthing Frightlinner didn't not connet wright. They seamed not want to be bothered. Sence I was going to return to NJ i got a appontment a Frightner in Gaffney SC. Had a full service and everthing checked. They put it on there computer and no fought codes showed up. They had me park it to be pulled into the shop by them and he had a hard time starting it. he tryed to make it do it again but was fine. They told me they couldn't find any problem. Told me go back to Cummings. ??????
PS Batteries have been cranking fine.
Thank you for any help.
FRUSTRATED, DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK OR DO.

Cummings engine swap

I am about to install a 1996 dodge cummings diesel in place of a 6.5 chev. diesel in a class A motorhome. my question is what part of the electronic junk do I have to leave on the engine to make it operate properly? I have been told by several shade tree mechanics I need none of it on that model engine. What is the sensor on the harmonic balancers purpose? Is the tubro boost controled mechanicaly or is it electrical? What would be wrong with replacing the mechanical fuel lift pump with an electrical fuel pump? I think it would be easer to prime and be less likley to be hard starting. I would appreciate any advice. I have done dozens of engine swaps over the last 50 years but this is the first time i've had to deal with one that may have some electronic control junk. Most of my work has been with heavy equiment or off road vehicles. Thanks for any and all help. Retired but not tired. standor@bellsouth.net

I am battling with a similar problem. I've installed a diesel engine out of a 2001 into a '99. There is no crankshaft sensor on the new engine and therefore I can't seem to get the fuel pump to run after a quick crank.
