Diesel Doctor

I'm having the classic problem with a 6.5 TD in a 97 1500 dieing after it gets warm. Another symptom occured last night that I can't figure out.

My son killed his battery in his truck and I tried to jump it with the diesel. The second he hit is key, the truck died and wouldn't re-start. The truck has 171K miles.

Since the check engine light is on, will those codes help me diagnose the specific problem? Working on a tight budget so I can't just throw $$ and parts at it. Thanks!
