Diesel Doctor

I want to put a diesel engine into a 1980's van. 70% of my driving will be cross country (including over the rockies) and about 30% will be around town, hopping on and off the freeway. I am mostly interested in good gas mileage but do need a certain amount of acceleration to be able to merge onto the freeway. I have had several suggestions to put a Cummins 4BT into it along with a 5 spd tranny.

Does this sound like a good combo?
